The Sanderling is one of the world’s most widespread shorebirds. Though they nest only in the High Arctic, in fall and winter you can find them on nearly all temperate and tropical sandy beaches throughout the world.

Not always easy to identify in fall plumage, this sparrow was bopping in and out of the shrubbery at Lake Erie Metropark along the Trappers Run trail near the nature center.

Look for Red Knots on sandy beaches and mudflats along the coasts during migration and winter (May and September are the best times in much of North America).

It's been a while.
