The color of fall leaves.
Plants make their own food. They take water from the ground through their roots. They take a gas called carbon dioxide from the air. They turn water and carbon dioxide into food and oxygen. Oxygen is a gas in the air that we need to breathe.
Plants make their food using sunlight and something called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll gives leaves their green color.
Winter days are short and dry. Many plants stop making food in the fall. The chlorophyll goes away. Then we can see orange and yellow colors. These colors were in the leaves all summer, but the green covered them up.
Some leaves turn red. This color is made in the fall, from food trapped in the leaves.
Brown colors are also made in the fall. They come from wastes left in the leaves.
Large shaggy mushrooms burst up from the forest floor. These edible mushrooms are known by several names; Shag, Shaggy mane, and Lawyer's Wig

As the leaves fall from the trees I dream of new beginnings. As the fallen leaves crunch under my boots I leave the past behind.
“It was one of those perfect fall days when the air is cool enough to wake you
up but the sun is also kissing your face.”

“Some leaves hang late, some fall
before the first frost--so goes
the tale of winter branches and old bones.”
William Carlos Williams (American Poet, 1883-1963)
When you have just spent a week relaxing in a place like this, it is hard to spend time behind the computer to catch up on everyone’s images on Flickr. Our weather is still great at home so I stay outdoors as much as I can. We had a wonderful time camping and taking pictures in this northern Ontario park. The evening light warmed the heart on the cooler days. The air was that perfect fall freshness and crispness without feeling like winter is on the way.
I'm still editing out old photos and discovering that we had a much better fall in 2016 than we did in 2021.

Glen Alton Recreation Area was a farm up until the 1980s. Now, is it slowly being reclaimed by the forest and a wetland.
North Carolina Mountains. A couple weeks ago I spent a few days along the southern Blue Ridge Parkway. There was a dash of color, cooler temperatures than Georgia, and fall migrants!

Here in north Georgia we usually get quite a few southbound migrating Hooded Warblers throughout the season. In fall migration it is often somewhat territorial and may stay in an area for days before moving on again. Both sexes act that way and will often respond to its chink call. Yes you can often tell a fall male Hooded from a spring one. The beak wil be more black in Spring and in the fall it is lighter.

This is a look back on a photo I took from 2018 in Waterton Canyon Colorado. I have not had a chance to get out this year to photograph the autumn colors. So you get an oldie but goodie imho.

Hiked along Fall Creek on our trek up to the South Sister near Bend Oregon. Glad I dragged my tripod along.

I wanted to see this for myself..."
