I never fail to enjoy a falconry demonstration and this was no exception. However I am going to be a little harsh here and say that was easily the least professional of any of the dozens I have seen.
Firstly, the quality of information was thin on the ground and somewhat brief in each case. Secondly, only 3 birds were shown and two of those were not falconry birds. Thirdly, none of the birds would reliably do anything that was asked of them. When he had finished the arena announcer was left to play piped music to fill the 10 mins of the allotted time not used.
The first bird was a kestrel - a strange choice of bird for falconry. There was no wind so the kestrel was unwilling or unable to hover so he tried flying it to a lure (albeit it rather slowly). The bird had a go but never caught anything which didn't surprise me as I didn't know that kestrels were bird hunters. However I guess he would know better than me - though it didn't actually help the bird catch anything.
The second bird was a barn owl. Although not a falconry bird it is not unusual to see barn owls flown at falconry displays for educational reasons. However that seemed a little pointless at this show because there was a separate owl display and the bird they used was so untrustworthy that they were not even prepared to let it fly untethered so it instead it had to do everything with a long piece of rope tied around its legs. And ironically it was the only one of the three birds shown which actually did everything that was asked of it.

This dude was in the pisser right before me. He then just walked to the bar (right by our table), sat down, and started to sleep. After about 20 minutes, the manager came by and woke him up. He immediately (seriously, w/o a moment's hesitation) walked right back to his table in the back. We salute you!
I was experimenting in Matt's bathroom the other night trying to get one of those evocative low-light self-portraits with the light striped by the louvered blinds on a moonlit night, but the light was just too too low to accomplish it. I decided to process -and in this case over-process- the shots anyway and this is what I got from one of them. ooooOOOOoooo. Cool abstract though, eh?
Several of us decided to have a virtual social media meet up using Oovoo. All of us had problems with sound or visuals or the time lag which made us look like we were dubbing badly.
Lots of laughing and ended up finishing the meet on Skype.

These pathetic, microsocopic crystals formed at the junction between the water surface and the thread. This was after several days.
I think this fella is something to do with our contracted catering company at work. He was doing his paperwork in the middle of the canteen, in the middle of lunch - a few of us noticed this.. in case you can't be bothered to view original size it says "FAILED DUE TO LACK OF JAM ROLY POLY". A bit harsh?
I think the rest of the paperwork was to back up his lead statement. Good work!
One of the stops on our tour: a local hatchery, where a whole bunch of fish swam around failing to clear that high jump. Which is good, because the far side was a dry pit.
FAIL BETTER, our exhibition exploring the beautiful, heroic and instructive side of failure, closes on Sunday 27th April. Take yourself on a virtual tour of the exhibition with these shots, then come and pay us a visit to get the full story from inspirational contributors like Sonia O'Sullivan, James Dyson, Robert Winston, Mark Pollock and Ranulph Fiennes – in their own words.
