Candid eye contact street photography from Glasgow, Scotland.

His bright orange hi-viz coat caught my eye as it reflected in the glass and then more and more of the scene spoke to me. The orange reflecting onto his face, the deep shadows and the splashes of green throughout the image - finally, the taxi with the message "Feeling low, anxious or stressed?" just pulled the image together. And what a face it is! The Great Grey Owl would easily stare me down, but the disc is all about hearing. This is of course not a wild life photo. This magnificent bird was shown to the public in the Screech Owl Sanctuary in Cornwall (Kernow). What I had not expected was that it did land next to me (and I do only manual shots). But this impressive raptor had no eyes for me, ignored me and thus graciously gave me some time to produce the shot. What a fortunate moment!

I found this queen (or more accurately, gyne) in my shed, apparently lifeless. Gynes find their way in, looking for possible nest sites, then become trapped & starve. Finding some signs of life, I stuck her in a heated vivarium with some sugar/water mix & 25 minutes later she was literally buzzing. It gave me the opportunity to take some shots which show the key identification features.

1. Yellow stripes on thorax NOT parallel-sided (compare with Vespula vulgaris).

2. pale hairs (not black) on first segment of abdomen.

3. Spots on second abdominal segment NOT joined to black band; central black marking elongate, tip reaching margin of next segment. (compare V. vulgaris).

4. Black lines originating from base of antennae narrow in the middle (compare V. vulgaris).

5. Space between bottom of eye & mandible ("malar space") is very short (this feature separates Vespula species from Dolichovespula species, which have an obvious gap between the two structures).

6."Occular sinus" yellow.

7. Three spots on face. Facial markings are often used to separate wasp species, but they are variable; this individual has the upper spot atypically joined to the black marking above it.

There are several other species of social wasp present in Britain, all generally quite similar. Many share some of the features shown above, but the combination of all the above is unique to V. germanica.

Gannets have complicated greeting rituals with graceful movements which reinforce their bonds. I chose this shot, from a sequence, to show the facial markings.

I have re-edited this image (Fuji X-E2 plus Helios 44m-7). Some time ago, I started with exploring the matter of visually stripping the self. What it means is, step by step and layer by layer, removing (visually) everything that makes a face personal or individual. In this image, I have accelerated the process of fragmentation. Technically, the pixel count has been greatly reduced, and symbolically, this visual fragmentation is a mirror of what happens to my life which is, physically, a process of increasing dissolution. You may ask, what is the point of doing this. The point is to know that there will be an end to my open eyes. But I wish to face the end with eyes open.

Beware: a suspicious-looking (and acting) bearded man has been reported roaming the neighborhood with a camera.

Created after taking photographs of two separate cloud forms and placing one: inverted in front of another one: original and using contrast and saturation to pull out the natural features of the clouds.

This is Number 2 of 3 of old ornamental masks in eighty style that I repainted for my mum, as I said before the previous one was more traditional, the third which I am still working with is the least traditional :)
