Owls can change the shape of their facial disc and therefore change the way they look at me. This photograph is a testimony of a few seconds of negotiation between this tawny owl (Strix aluco) and me, a few seconds in which this specimen seemed to say to me: "Don't look at me or I'll leave and you won't be able to find me" and since that day I have not seen it again...

I have re-edited this image (Fuji X-E2 plus Helios 44m-7). Some time ago, I started with exploring the matter of visually stripping the self. What it means is, step by step and layer by layer, removing (visually) everything that makes a face personal or individual. In this image, I have accelerated the process of fragmentation. Technically, the pixel count has been greatly reduced, and symbolically, this visual fragmentation is a mirror of what happens to my life which is, physically, a process of increasing dissolution. You may ask, what is the point of doing this. The point is to know that there will be an end to my open eyes. But I wish to face the end with eyes open.

This capture is unaltered; straight-out-of-camera except rotation and cropping.
Spending and evening at home, I lit my fire-pit outside and grabbed the camera and tripod. Setting the camera to bulb exposure mode I took many shots of the burning logs during the evening with a remote release. A few weeks later, when reviewing the images, I tried rotating some to see if any interesting patterns were in the flames.
After rotating this capture clockwise by 90 degrees, I saw what looked like a skull formed from the dying flame on an ember log.

Woodman shows his Facial Expression
But without any Aggression
Wood is not a dead Material
That would be too trivial
This face is alive
But how long will it survive ?
Or is it just a Fantasy overdrive ?
It is full of Life, Let's face it
Not sure whether it's nice, I must admit
Beauty lies in the eyes of the Beholder
And taste might change
As we are getting older ....

And what a face it is! The Great Grey Owl would easily stare me down, but the disc is all about hearing. This is of course not a wild life photo. This magnificent bird was shown to the public in the Screech Owl Sanctuary in Cornwall (Kernow). What I had not expected was that it did land next to me (and I do only manual shots). But this impressive raptor had no eyes for me, ignored me and thus graciously gave me some time to produce the shot. What a fortunate moment!

Plaster cast of the head of the Olympian Hermes by Praxiteles against a dark background (natural light). The god has been depicted as a beardless young man and his face is difficult to read. Alternatively, it can be read in many ways. Hermes would be consulted in matters of trade and communication, but perhaps more important was his role as Psychopomp - the one leading
the deceased to their final destination, Hades.
Beware: a suspicious-looking (and acting) bearded man has been reported roaming the neighborhood with a camera.

THE MAN-MACHINE: JORDAN WOLFSON ON HIS GIANT NEW ROBOT, HUNG BY CHAINS AT ZWIRNER
It was a gigantic steel outline of a cube with cylinders spinning and whirring to release metal chains that were holding up the larger-than-life figure, which had joints throughout its body to allow it to be contorted in harrowing, grotesque ways. The winches that held up the chains went left to right in various speeds, and the chains were coiled and released in different measures, allowing for the figure to get twisted into any number of permutations—it’s a precise dance that Wolfson programmed himself, to allow for viewers to watch the figure float within the space in a carefully calibrated cycle of movements: quick starts, long silences and placid moments, atonal spasms, swooping glides, and those punishing falls to the floor. It became more wrenching and
powerful the more cycles I took in. After some slow movements and dramatic silences, the figure would get thrashed toward me, the chains making deafening noises and the figure’s head getting smashed again and again on the ground.
During certain points, the hanging man came to the foreground, and hung perpendicular to the ground, no limb askew, and then slowly glided left-to-right, like a nonthreatening ghost just kind of hovering in front of you. And then the eyes: they lit up with LED screens, and the pupils and irises dilated in a way that seems deeply familiar. The eyes use facial recognition technology to lock gazes with visitors in the room, and then employ fiber optics to intimate an expression of deep pain. (They also have the capability to show some of the video works that Wolfson is known for—though he’s never shown any in an environment quite like this.)
The entire presentation could remind one of Wolfson’s singing robot sculpture (Female figure) 2014 (2014) Wolfson’s last foray into robotics, two years ago at this same space. And while the two works are quite different—the new “robot” is now being jerked around by a mechanical puppet master in the form of chains on pulleys, instead of relying on combustion from an internal motorized system—Wolfson admits that “it’s kind of an extension” of that show.
A strange, fascinating, and very interesting exhibition with an unexpected music...
Gillie and Marc Schattner are a British and Australian collaborative artist couple. Gillie and Marc are known for their animal, human-animal hybrid and abstract sculptures, which have been exhibited as public works of art around the world.
'Go Wildlife Go', currently standing on Paternoster Square, near St Paul's Cathedral, until February 2026, represents an elephant, a giraffe, a lion, a koala and numerous other wild animals cast in bronze, scooting their way through the city.
Presumably they've an important meeting to get to somewhere in the concrete jungle.
But the untamed tableaux carries a serious message. The African elephant is threatened by poaching. The Masai giraffe is endangered due to habitat loss. Fewer than 3,000 individual Grevy's zebras remain. There are only two female northern white rhinos left in the world.
"This sculpture is not just an artwork," say Gillie and Marc, "it's a movement. We want people to experience the thrill of the ride, but also to understand the importance of coming together for a common cause. By riding side-by-side with these endangered creatures, we hope to inspire action and remind everyone that we are all part of the same ecosystem.
"The ride may be fun, but the stakes are real."
