These owls roost in the day, usually in pairs. When disturbed they may fly in bright sunshine although they choose to shelter within a dense grove of trees. They produce an eerie chuhua-aa call with a quaver in the second note. This call is an antiphonal duet of the male and female. The male calls one or two times followed by the female's shorter and less tremulous version. The calling is more frequent in November when the begin to breed. Most Nests are found from February to April. They also produce a single note hoot and a screech not unlike that of the barn owl. The nest is a tree hollow in which two to three white eggs are laid. The Indian eagle-owl, also called the rock eagle-owl or Bengal eagle-owl (Bubo bengalensis), is a species of large horned owl restricted to the Indian Subcontinent. They were earlier treated as a subspecies of the Eurasian eagle-owl. They are found in hilly and rocky scrub forests, and are usually seen in pairs. They have a deep resonant booming call that may be heard at dawn and dusk. They are typically large owls, and have "tufts" on their heads. They are splashed with brown and grey, and have a white throat patch with black small stripes.

This large owl with the distinctive face, large forward-facing eyes, horns and deep resonant call is associated with a number of superstitions. Like many other large owls, these are considered birds of ill omen. Their deep haunting calls if delivered from atop a house are considered to forebode the death of an occupant. A number of rituals involving the capture and killing of these birds have been recorded. Salim Ali notes a wide range of superstitions related to them but notes two as being particularly widespread. One is that if the bird is starved for a few days and beaten, it would speak like a human, predicting the future of the tormentor or bringing them wealth while the other involves the killing of the bird to find a lucky bone that moved against the current like a snake when dropped into a stream.Belief in these superstitions has led to the persecution of the species in many areas by tribal hunters. The capture of these birds is illegal under Indian law but an underground market continues to drive poaching.

The double-crested cormorant is a member of the cormorant family of water birds. It is found near rivers and lakes and in coastal areas and is widely distributed across North America, from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska down to Florida and Mexico. Measuring 70–90 cm (28–35 in) in length, it is entirely black except for a bare patch of orange-yellow facial skin and some extra plumage that it exhibits in the breeding season when it grows a double crest in which black feathers are mingled with white.

Five subspecies are recognized. It mainly eats fish and hunts by swimming and diving. Its feathers, like all cormorants, are not waterproof, and it must dry them out after spending time in the water. Once threatened by the use of DDT, the numbers of this bird have increased markedly in recent years. (Wikipedia)

Yesterday, we spent a wonderful morning at the zoo with our granddaughter. We watched as she squealed with delight at the antics of many of the animals that were living there. One of the mammals that was swimming around was a very active sea lion. It made me think of some of the aquatic mammals that we have seen in the wild during our travels.

The harbor seal, seen during a trip to the Pacific northwest, is the most common seal in the world. It's found along the eastern and western coastlines in the US. This gal was so cute as it would pop up for pictures when humans were around. OK, I think probably it was popping up for a free handout, which unfortunately is a human-caused problem and also illegal. But come on, how cute is it?

Over our years visiting Alaska and engaging in many aquatic adventures there, we've been visited by sea otter, sea lions, seals, and sea otters ... all either hunting their prey in the open waters or simply frolicking along either by themselves or with others. They always delighted us. Not sure which I would say was my favorite ... what about you?

Indian paradise flycatchers (Terpsiphone paradisi) are noisy birds uttering sharp skreek calls. They have short legs and sit very upright whilst perched prominently, like a shrike. They are insectivorous and hunt in flight in the understorey. In the afternoons they dive from perches to bath in small pools of water.

The Eastern Chipmunk's habitat includes open deciduous woodlands, forest edges, brushy areas, bushes and stone walls in cemeteries and around houses.

An dieser Körperhaltung, die etwas an eine Banane erinnert, kann man sehen, dass die Robbe entspannt ist und daß es ihr gut geht. Ich bin froh, dass man das an diesem Merkmal festmachen kann. From this posture, which is somewhat reminiscent of a banana, you can see that the seal is relaxed and that it is doing well. I am glad that this can be determined from this feature. The stone sculptures in Sno, a small village in the Kazbegi region of Georgia, are part of a remarkable art project in the Caucasus. Photos like these make me all smiley that I made a set called "entropy", photos like this one really feel at home with the sense of "entropy".

I wanted it to look milky, but catching the most agressivity and spurring it out, and milk is one of the last things we could associate with agressivity, and I love the irony here.

Avec cette photo d’archive (2014), je voulais vous aviser de mon intention de créer un nouveau groupe sur Flickr.

Depuis toujours, et ceux qui me connaissent depuis mes débuts sur cette galerie (2012), savent que j’affectionne particulièrement « les portraits de rue » d’où mon intention de concrétiser cette passion au travers d’un nouveau groupe qui s’intitulera ; « Facial Expression and Body Language » !

Je dois également vous avouer que depuis un certain temps et pour des raison diverses dont un problème persistant de lombaires et un confinement difficilement supporté, je n’ai plus eu guère l’occasion de faire mes « petites vadrouilles photographiques » dans les rues …

Mais tout cela se soigne comme il est courant de dire et je serai de retour le plus rapidement possible sur « le terrain » ….

Quant à ma présence sur la galerie, elle ne me pose pas de problème puisque il me suffit de me trouver devant mon iMac pour être en contact avec vous tous, mes amis « les artistes » !

The white-faced heron (Egretta novaehollandiae) also known as the white-fronted heron, and incorrectly as the grey heron, or blue crane, is a common bird throughout most of Australasia, including New Guinea, the islands of Torres Strait, Indonesia, New Zealand, and all but the driest areas of Australia.

It is a medium-sized heron, pale, slightly bluish-grey, with yellow legs and white facial markings. It can be found almost anywhere near shallow water, fresh or salt, and although it is prompt to depart the scene on long, slow-beating wings if disturbed, it will boldly raid suburban fish ponds.

Love the 'facial expression' here. Taking the prize for smallest crab spider I ever saw during trips to Pennsylvania - body length just a few mm - a male Mecaphesa species.

Without stacking, a little trouble here accommodating all planes with a macro lens single shot, given its size.

Found on the dining room table of where I was staying, possibly it had ridden in on some flowers brought in from outside.
