Huge white bird with long neck and all-black bill. Immatures dusky gray-brown with pink on bill. Forages in shallow, vegetated wetlands reaching under the water for plants, and walks through corn stubble. Breeds in freshwater marshes and ponds. Winters on any open body of water where food is available. Extremely similar to Tundra Swan, but never shows yellow on bill. Also, note subtle features of face: facial skin is relatively broad where it meets eye, so the eye doesn't stand out, and border between white face and black bill is straight (curved on Tundra). From head-on, the border of the bill and forehead is usually pointed (straight or curved on Tundra). Often in pairs or family groups. Almost went extinct in early 20th century, but population has rebounded and been reintroduced to some areas. (eBird)
This swan was an unusual find in Victoria. It was nice to see one without wing tags - most of the Trumpeter Swans in Ontario have been re-introduced and so sport large yellow tags on their wings. Admittedly, this makes it easier to identify them if you can't see their face clearly.

An eventful, beautiful but also very strenuous weekend (with little sleep and lots of hiking in the fresh air) is over. It's still a bit difficult for me to find the energy to start the working week.
But we won't let that stop us, right? With this in mind, I wish you all a successful start to the week.

The Indian eagle-owl, also called the rock eagle-owl or Bengal eagle-owl (Bubo bengalensis), is a species of large horned owl restricted to the Indian Subcontinent. They were earlier treated as a subspecies of the Eurasian eagle-owl. They are found in hilly and rocky scrub forests, and are usually seen in pairs. They have a deep resonant booming call that may be heard at dawn and dusk. They are typically large owls, and have "tufts" on their heads. They are splashed with brown and grey, and have a white throat patch with black small stripes.
This large owl with the distinctive face, large forward-facing eyes, horns and deep resonant call is associated with a number of superstitions. Like many other large owls, these are considered birds of ill omen. Their deep haunting calls if delivered from atop a house are considered to forebode the death of an occupant. A number of rituals involving the capture and killing of these birds have been recorded. Salim Ali notes a wide range of superstitions related to them but notes two as being particularly widespread. One is that if the bird is starved for a few days and beaten, it would speak like a human, predicting the future of the tormentor or bringing them wealth while the other involves the killing of the bird to find a lucky bone that moved against the current like a snake when dropped into a stream.Belief in these superstitions has led to the persecution of the species in many areas by tribal hunters. The capture of these birds is illegal under Indian law but an underground market continues to drive poaching.
Yesterday, we spent a wonderful morning at the zoo with our granddaughter. We watched as she squealed with delight at the antics of many of the animals that were living there. One of the mammals that was swimming around was a very active sea lion. It made me think of some of the aquatic mammals that we have seen in the wild during our travels.
The harbor seal, seen during a trip to the Pacific northwest, is the most common seal in the world. It's found along the eastern and western coastlines in the US. This gal was so cute as it would pop up for pictures when humans were around. OK, I think probably it was popping up for a free handout, which unfortunately is a human-caused problem and also illegal. But come on, how cute is it?
Over our years visiting Alaska and engaging in many aquatic adventures there, we've been visited by sea otter, sea lions, seals, and sea otters ... all either hunting their prey in the open waters or simply frolicking along either by themselves or with others. They always delighted us. Not sure which I would say was my favorite ... what about you?
Thanks for stopping by and here's wishing you a fabulous weekend.

The Smew (Mergellus albellus) is a distinctive species of diving duck and the only living member of the genus Mergellus. Often referred to as "sawbills," they possess specialized serrated bills with hooked tips designed to firmly grasp slippery prey underwater.
Physical Appearance
Drakes (Males):
Known colloquially as "White Nuns," adult males in breeding plumage are striking and predominantly snow-white. They feature a characteristic black facial mask, a small bushy crest, and fine black lines on their back and breast that create a "cracked ice" or "panda-like" appearance.
Hens (Females) and Juveniles: Often called "Redheads," they are primarily grey with a chestnut-brown crown and nape, contrasting sharply with a white throat and cheeks.
Size:
They are compact ducks, roughly the size of a teal, with a length of 35–44 cm and a wingspan of 55–69 cm.
Habitat and Diet
Smews are highly specialized for aquatic environments:
Diet:
They are skilled underwater hunters that dive for 15–30 seconds to catch their prey. Their diet consists mainly of small fish (such as minnows and eels), aquatic insects, larvae, crustaceans, and amphibians.
Nesting:
Uniquely for ducks, they are cavity nesters. They typically lay their eggs in tree hollows, often using old holes made by Black Woodpeckers, located up to 10 meters above the ground.
Distribution and Migration
Breeding:
They breed across the northern taiga forests of Scandinavia and Russia, typically near fish-rich freshwater lakes and slow rivers.
Wintering: In winter, they migrate south to more temperate regions, including central Europe, the UK, and parts of Asia like China, Korea, and Japan.
Status in the UK:
They are considered a scarce winter visitor. While previously hundreds wintered in the UK, numbers have dropped to around 130 individuals in recent years. This decline is often attributed to climate change, as milder winters allow the birds to stay closer to their northern breeding grounds.
Conservation
While the Smew is classified as Least Concern globally on the IUCN Red List, it is on the UK Red List for Birds of Conservation Concern due to declining wintering numbers. Major threats include habitat loss through deforestation and predation by invasive species like the American mink.
Indian paradise flycatchers (Terpsiphone paradisi) are noisy birds uttering sharp skreek calls. They have short legs and sit very upright whilst perched prominently, like a shrike. They are insectivorous and hunt in flight in the understorey. In the afternoons they dive from perches to bath in small pools of water.
Eastern Chipmunk.
Between 8 1/2 to 11 3/4 inches in length. Reddish brown above with a white belly with 1 white stripe bordered by 2 black stripes on sides ending at the rump and 2 white stripes on back much thinner than side stripes. They have a dark center stripe down the back and pale facial stripes above and below the eyes. The tail is brown on the tip and edged with black. They also have prominent ears.
The Eastern Chipmunk's habitat includes open deciduous woodlands, forest edges, brushy areas, bushes and stone walls in cemeteries and around houses.
They range from southeastern Canada and to the northeastern United States from North Dakota in the west to the Carolinas and Virginia in the east.

My beautiful dog Beau on Winthorpe beach Skegness...He is an old patriarch now with his facial fur gone white but still my handsome adorable dog :)
Taken at Karuah, Nr Newcastle, NSW.
Considered a subspecies of the great egret (A. alba).
Its bill is black in the breeding season and yellow at other times, and its long legs are red or black. The colours of the bare parts of the face change to green during the breeding season. The breeding plumage is also marked by long neck plumes and a green facial area. The eastern great egret can be distinguished from other white egrets and herons in Asia and Australia by its very long neck, one and a half times as long as its own body.
Blue Jay.
Around 12 inches long. A bright blue top with a lot of white and black in the wings and tail with a dingy white bottom. They have black facial marking and a prominent crest.
The inhabit chiefly oak forests, but now also city parks and suburban yards especially where oak trees predominate.
They range east of the Rocky Mountains from southern Canada to the GUlf of Mexico. In winter they often withdraw from the northern parts of their range.

"Richard sat back on the plastified couch, a blood-spattered popcorn box balanced on his knee. Across from him, Nubbins —a tiny patchwork creature of gears, wires, and uncertain purpose— fidgeted nervously, its single eye blinking in uneven rhythms.
“I told you,” the little being buzzed, “the kernels resisted. They initiated combustion early.”
Richard raised an eyebrow, half-smiling, half-exhausted. The popcorn crackled softly, as if still alive.
Nubbins sighed, a puff of digital static escaping its chest. “Next time, I’ll use less plasma.”
Richard just laughed —a low, echoing sound that seemed to fill the sterile room with something almost human. Two misfits sharing snacks at the edge of the apocalypse."

The picture I am presenting was taken with an excellent 85mm f/1.4 lens, renowned for its outstanding sharpness at wide apertures, smooth bokeh, and natural rendering of facial features—ideal for portraits.
Its shallow depth of field elegantly isolates the subject, while its fast autofocus and compact design make it perfect for street photography.
Thanks to these qualities, this lens enhances spontaneous portraits and captures authentic expressions in an urban setting.

A featured raptor, the Eurasian Eagle-owl at the Raptorama held this year at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Center in Queens, New York.
The Eurasian eagle-owl belongs to the Family Strigidae and the Genus Bubo. This bird is among the largest species of owls in the world, and can measure 30 inches in length with an impressive wing span of over six feet.
The Eurasian eagle-owl usually weighs somewhere between two-and-a-half and ten pounds, with the males being slightly smaller in size and stature than their female counterparts.
Physical characteristics specific to this species of owl include tufted "ears" of feathers, orange eyes, dense bodies, and black beaks, as well as barred wings and tails. The feathers of this species are largely brown, streaks with black plumage. The areas on the bird’s underbelly are lighter in tone, while the Eurasian eagle-owl's throat is white. The facial disc on the Eurasian eagle-owl is grey in color and concave-shaped.

Photos like these make me all smiley that I made a set called "entropy", photos like this one really feel at home with the sense of "entropy".
I wanted it to look milky, but catching the most agressivity and spurring it out, and milk is one of the last things we could associate with agressivity, and I love the irony here.
Known amongst Old Dalby test track train crew as the 'Grimston Facial', the most southerly of three vent shafts in Grimston Tunnel has a constant waterfall throughout the year. The water is a bit pungent and it's not a good idea to have your cab window open as you pass. But is growing a beard obligatory under Islam?
Professor Muhammad Abdel Haleem, of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, says "this is not the only view expressed by Muslim scholars."
Many Muslim scholars now do not see the beard as an obligation and do shave their beards.
Muslims learn about the Prophet's views on facial hair not from the Koran, but through hadith - or sayings - attributed to Muhammad.
One such hadith, in a collection by Muslim scholar Muhammad al-Bukhari centuries ago, stipulates: "Cut the moustaches short and leave the beard."
The Prophet Muhammad is believed to have had a beard and those who insist that devout Muslims grow beards argue that they are doing no more than asking the faithful to emulate the Prophet's actions.
