A sea stack near Bandon, Oregon gazes at the setting sun. According to Native American legend, it is the face of a beautiful princess who swam into the ocean and was turned into stone by the evil spirit of the sea. The nearby rocks were thought to be her cat and kittens which were also turned to stone.

Yet another iconic sound of the Peruvian Amazon, but such a rare sight.
There aren't many photos of this bird out there - its colours, ground dwelling behaviour and aversion to open spaces in the dark undergrowth of the Amazon all combined to make it one hard to see bird!
Even with the help of playback it seems more like a ghost with a voice than a real bird.

黑面琵鷺是目前全世界6種琵鷺中，數量最稀少的種類。
形態特徵：
體長：71-83公分，全身體色與琵鷺酷似，嘴長、先端為黑色、扁平呈現匙狀，且嘴基、額、眼先端之黑色相連。夏羽：全身大都為白色，但後頭飾羽及頸下為黃色；冬羽：全身白色。
生物習性：
常小群出現於海岸附近的沙洲及淺灘，大多在黃昏及夜間覓食，白天休息停棲。覓食時，會以扁平的匙狀嘴喙於淺水中左右撈動。主要食物為魚類、昆蟲、兩生類等等。
棲地分布：
主要分布在亞洲東部、韓國、中國東北或西伯利亞地區，多棲息於濕地與沼澤中。會在臺灣地區度冬。

Laughingthrushes are usually not easy to photograph as they skulk around in vegetation rarely showing themselves in the open. Black-faced Laughingthrushes seem to be quite uncommon and are usually massively outnumbered by Elliot's Laughingthrush in the high altitude forests where they live. I have seen Black-faced each time I have visited Sichuan but this was the first time I have managed to photograph one at close range, in full view. The field guide confirms that it is generally uncommon from 1500-4500m, living in Rhododendron and Juniper thickets, keeping to undergrowth. In China it is also the Laughingthrush that occurs at the highest altitude.

in some funny places. Anyone else do this? It's Saturday, I've been cleaning all day and finally taking a break.. and could quite possibly be feeling a bit stir-crazy?

There are three really nice wildlife refuges near Los Banos in Central California. I took this picture at the Merced National Wildlife Refuge. There is a viewing drive that goes around the refuge. You are not supposed to get out of your car when driving, but you can in the parking areas. The birds will scatter even when you drive by slowly. This white faced ibis was kind enough to pose for me for a few pictures. This was the best of the bunch.
I had fun using two cameras today. I was using the d500 with my 600mm lens all day and didn't have much luck until I got to this wildlife refuge. There weren't many cranes or herons on this trip. So I was pretty glad to see a few of these birds hanging around. I stopped my truck and shot out of the window to get this picture. Even though I was the only one in the refuge, it would be my luck to get my hand slapped for getting out of my truck. Turned out pretty good for a window shot.

I'm amazed I managed to rally in time to get this shot done today before Lost tonight. Let me back up. I went to Urgent Care this morning to get my leg checked out since I still can't walk. Turns out I tore my calf muscle and fascia in my right leg. The good news is that I didn't rupture my achilles tendon, so I won't need surgery. The bad news is that it's going to be 4-6 weeks before I can even think about running, jumping, playing soccer, or anything else that I actually want to do with my leg. But I'm thankful because it could be worse. I have to keep reminding myself of that. Anyway, the doctor gave me a prescription for Percocet to help with the pain. I had some issues with nausea when I took Vicodin a few years back, so he thought Percocet would be a good alternative.
WRONG!
About forty-five minutes after taking it, I hit a brick wall of nausea and was completely laid up for the rest of the afternoon, petrified that I was going to throw up. Did I mention that I do NOT throw up? I do everything in my power to avoid it at all costs, no matter what. Even when I know I will feel better afterwards. No thank you. Anyway, today sucked. That's pretty much the point of the story. But I managed to get this shot off for this week's Emulation Challenge in My Face is My Canvas. Can you believe this is our 25th week of emulation challenges??? If you haven't already checked out the group and you have even the slightest interest in face art photography, you owe it to yourself to stop by. And for those of you who haven't played in a while...hey, we miss you! ;)
