Scarlet-faced Liocichla is a colourful member of the Laughingthrushes and allies family (Leiothrichidae). The eBird description of this species says it is “furtive and shy, typically foraging in dense undergrowth,” so were lucky to see several of these birds at a feeding station high on a remote ridge in the Doi Lang area of Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park, which is in Chiang Mai province, Thailand.

Taken on Maritime Lane, Leith, Edinburgh Scotland, 2021.

Heron: "What am I lookin' at? What are YOU lookin' at?"

Swamphen: "Stop staring at me!"

Heron: "You stop staring at me then!"

Taken for the Macro Mondays theme of buttons. Sadly this little face desperately needs some dental work but due to Covid hasn't been able to get to the dentist and is now suffering from extreme tooth decay!

Thank you for taking the time to visit, comment, fave or invite. I really appreciate them all.

This past summer, I was just about to step off of the boardwalk when I noticed this dragonfly resting in the morning sun.

We found this beautiful Red-faced Warbler while exploring Carr Canyon in the Huachucas of Southeastern Arizona. No matter how many times I see these little beauties it’s always exciting!

White-faced ibis are in decline in North America due to the draining of wetlands. The largest nesting colony in the world can be found in the marshes around the Great Salt lake in Utah.

This one was photographed in the Bear River NWR, Utah.

White-faced Heron

Egretta novaehollandiae

Ardeidae

The White-faced Heron is particularly versatile. It can be seen in many different wetland habitats: they occur on reefs, in rock pools and mudflats by the coast, in estuaries and saltmarsh, swamps, rivers, drains and at farm dams; they even occur in pasture and hypersaline wetlands. There they can be seen foraging for a wide range of prey, mostly small aquatic creatures, using various methods, including standing and waiting for their prey, slowly stalking it, frantically dashing after it, or disturbing it by stirring the water with their feet.

The blue-faced Malkoha is a bird of open forests and scrub jungle. Easy to distinguish as its bill is apple green, and it has a naked patch of blue skin surrounding the eye. The sexes are alike. The bird is a non-parasitic Cuckoo found in the scrub and deciduous forests of peninsular India and Sri Lanka. The Blue-faced Malkoha forages in the undergrowth, taking a variety of insects, caterpillars and small vertebrates. It is also called the Small Green-billed Malkoha. This is a new species for me, the first of this year.

Glanced down at my desk and saw this face looking back at me (your only clue). What is it?
