The extravagant Austin A90 Atlantic made its debut at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show in London. The first sketches are said to be made by the chairman of Austin Leonard Lord. But its more likely that the A90 Atlantic was styled by Dick Burzi.

About half of the production was exported. Sales in the US were not as expected. The A40 Atlantic had to compete with the new Jaguar XK120, which was also presented at the 1948 London car show. Besides its modest performance could not be compared with the American V8 engines.

The 2-door A90 Atlantic Sports Saloon followed in 1950.

Famous hummingbird restricted to the Andean cloud forest of northern Peru. Due to its extravagant tail, its blue crown and its iridescent green throat, the male of this species is one of the most spectacular birds in the world. Occasionally sheds its distinctive tail feathers, so it is common to see males without one or both "racquets", or with one much longer than the other. The female is mainly green above and white below; best identified by combination of: white patch behind eye, mottled throat, and slightly elongated tail feathers with rounded tips. Feeds on flowers at low to mid levels, usually on edges or in clearings.

This one was photographed in Northern Peru led by Neotropic Photo Tours and our Peruvian guide Steve Sánchez Wildlife Photography.

The architecture and decoration is certainly extravagant, but the combination of a very wide angle lens and HDR processing has produced this rather hallucinatory result.

It features an amazing blend of Islamic, Middle Eastern, and Omani architectural styles, and also hosts one of the world’s largest handmade Persian rugs and one of the world’s biggest chandeliers, with 600,000 shining bright Swarovski crystals and weighing some 8,5 tons!

The Balchik Palace is a palace in the Bulgarian Black Sea town and resort of Balchik in Southern Dobruja. The official name of the palace was the Quiet Nest Palace. It was constructed between 1926 and 1937, during the Romanian control of the region, for the needs of Queen Marie of Romania. The palace complex consists of a number of residential villas, a smoking hall, a wine cellar, a power station, a monastery, a holy spring, a chapel and many other buildings, as well as most notably a park that is today a state-run botanical garden. Balkan and Ottoman Turkish motifs were used in the construction of the palace that was carried out by Italian architects Augustino and Americo, while a florist was hired from Switzerland to arrange the park. The main building's extravagant minaret coexists with a Christian chapel, perfectly illustrating the queen's Baháʼí Faith beliefs.

The Tatra streamlined cars are one of the most extravagant cars I know. These futuristic vehicles were its time far ahead.

The T87 was based on the T77 which was first presented in 1934.

In the early 1930s the concept of fast and economical built streamlined cars became very popular. Not only in the US but mainly in Germany and Middle-European countries avant-garde ideas were put into practice.

The Tatra T77 was developed by designer and engineer Paul Jaray (Hungary, 1889-1974) and Hans Ledwinka (Austria, 1878-1967, also designer and engineer). Cooperator was engineer Erich Übelacker (Czech, 1899-1977).

Jaray was an early pioneer in streamlined airplanes and car bodies. Ledwinka invented the so called backbone chassis: a frameless central tubular chassis with swing axles and with independent suspension. He had a preference for rear-mounted air-cooled engines, which were applied in all streamlined Tatras. The revolutionary ideas of these automotive inventors resulted in one of the greatest cars ever, at least to my opinion.

The T87 underwent a restyle by František Kardaus in 1948. It received a new dashboard, the central third headlamp was removed and the other two lamps were integrated into the front fenders, like the 1946-52 T600 Tatraplan already had.

Ledwinka had with Tatra a great influence in modernizing car design. The T87 is a real automotive icon.

Above this all seeing such an old original T87 with original 1950s Dutch plates is beyond expectation.

This Tatra was delivered new to the Romanian ambassador in the Netherlands in 1948. It was in service till the mid 1960s. It was still in use in Den Haag when Mr. Ad Palmen bought this Tatra around 1975.

Central Park, New York City

I love traveling and the learning that comes with it. On my recent trip to New York City I learned that a folly isn’t just an absurdity, a costly and foolish undertaking or an unwise investment or expenditure. It can also be a type of building. In architecture, a folly is a whimsical or extravagant building constructed primarily for decoration, to serve as a conversation piece, to lend interest to a view, or even to commemorate a person or event. Most Wyomingites are practical and do not have much use for whimsical buildings constructed as ‘decoration” Since I was born in Wyoming, I have never really given any thought to a large buildings thats purpose was for just for decoration.. It does seem, however, they were particularly popular in England in the 18th Century. This architectural concept was introduced to Central Park in New York City by Calvert Vaux (December 20, 1824, – November 19, 1895), a British-American architect and landscape designer.

In 1867, Vaux created a Gothic-style castle-like structure atop an outcrop of metamorphic rock (schist) called Vista Rock. Built as an observation platform without doors or windows, the top of the 2 story structure offers sweeping views of the Park and its surrounding cityscape. It looks out over the Great Lawn to the north and the Ramble to the south. Vaux named his creation Belvedere which means beautiful view in Italian. Not only is it a viewpoint but is was meant as a landmark for park pedestrians. “The castle’s United States flag could be seen from the Mall, drawing the walkers down to Bethesda Terrace, over Bow Bridge, and through the Ramble to the castle itself. In their Greensward Plan for Central Park, designers Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) and Vaux illustrated this path, sketching the line of view from the Mall to the castle” (from reference 2).

The castle is built out of the same schist that makes up Vista Rock. This building stone came from quarries in the park and gives the illusion of a castle rising out of the ground. The lighter colored stone trim is made of granite quarried in Quincy, Massachusetts. Colored slate from Vermont, Virginia, and New York cover the roof of the structure.

In 1919, the Castle lost its standing as a true folly when it was converted for practical use. That year the National Weather Service took over the building and started enclosing it. They altered the turret’s shape to accommodate their scientific instruments. In 1919 it became their Central Park Weather Observatory. Technology changed and by the early 1960s, the Weather Bureau replaced the lab with automated instruments. They closed their Castle station after which the building remained empty and deteriorating. Finally in 1983 the Central Park Conservancy restored the building by replacing the original turret, rebuilding the pavilions, and converting the castle’s interior into a visitor’s center and bookstore. In 2018-2019, a $12M restoration and repair project was completed. The project restored the buildings facade, provided expansive views through new clear-pane-glass windows, installed new mechanical and utility systems, and recreated the wooden tower that was part of Olmsted and Vaux’s original plan 150 years ago. The tower had been modified by the National Weather Service.

Belvedere Castle is one of sites in the Central Park National Historic Landmark, The park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1963.

The Oregon Coast is known for its extravagant headlands, rugged shores and dramatic scenery. It draws visitors from all over the world to experience its beauty, often during spring and summer months where the sun peeks through the clouds and you can get outside without getting soaked during rainy seasons.

Although many people come to play on the beaches of the Coast in warmer months, storm watching in the winter has its own part to play in the magic of the Coast. Particularly in winter, were ferocious Pacific Ocean waves roll in to pound the Coast. When the storms are at their peak, towering waves drive spectacular walls of water against the Shore Acres State Park’s craggy sandstone cliffs high above the ocean.

This large expanse of space captured with the Hubble Space Telescope features the galaxy SDSS J225506.80+005839.9. Unlike many other extravagant galaxies and stunning nebulae imaged by Hubble, this galaxy does not have a short, popular name, and is only known by its long name given in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which refers to its coordinates in the sky. This galaxy – visible in the center right portion of the image – and its many wondrous neighboring galaxies lie in the constellation of Pisces (the Fish).

This is a post-starburst galaxy, which is a product of galaxies that have merged within the past billion years. This merger event drove gas to the galaxy's center and created an abundance of new stars, of which the brightest are visible in the remnant galaxy's core. The visible shells and tails surrounding the galaxy are also a result of this merger event.

Residing far beyond our own Milky Way at a distance of about 500 million light-years, it is almost impossible to glimpse this galaxy without the assistance of Hubble, and, like thousands of similar faint and very distant galaxies, it was only discovered and cataloged in recent years. Many millions of galaxies still await our discovery as we build a wondrous picture of our night sky.

“Hooded” is something of an understatement for this extravagantly crested little duck. Females get their distinctive elegance from their cinnamon crest. The floodlit remarkable decorated spire of the 1320's and the extravagant south porch, added in 1637.

The porch is highly ornate, with spiral columns supporting a curly pediment framing a shell niche with a statue of the Virgin and Child, underneath a Gothic fan vault. The style was too close to Roman baroque and Catholicism for the puritans of the day and the porch itself was used as evidence in Archbishop Laud's execution trial, citing its "scandalous statue" to which one witness saw "one bow and another pray". Only five years after the porch was erected the statue of the Virgin Mary and Child had their heads shot off by passing puritan Cromwellian soldiers in 1642. They were later restored but the body still contains bullet holes.

To be a goddess of such a beautiful flower is so extravagant

Dotonbori Area: The Bright Heart of Osaka

The lively entertainment area of Dotonbori is Osaka’s most famous tourist destination and renowned for its gaudy neon lights, extravagant signage, and the enormous variety of restaurants and bars.

The name “Dotonbori” generally refers both to the Dotonbori Canal and to Dotonbori Street which runs parallel to the canal’s southern bank. It is one of the most colorful areas in Osaka and an absolute must-visit location when traveling through Kansai region.

The history of this area goes back to 1612 when a merchant by the name of Yasui Doton invested all of his personal capital in an ambitious local development project. Doton’s plan was to divert and expand the Umezu River into a new waterway that would link the local canal network with the Kizugawa River. Unfortunately, Doton’s project was interrupted by war and he himself was killed during the Siege of Osaka in 1615. Later that same year, Doton’s cousins completed his work and in his memory the new canal was named Dotonbori or “Doton Canal”.

The new canal brought with it a flood of trade and from 1626 the area began to flourish as an entertainment district too after theater companies and playhouses began to move into the area on the canal’s southern bank. At the same time the north bank of the canal began to prosper with restaurants and teahouses that supplied food, drink and entertainment to theater goers after they left the theaters.

Trump attends another extravagant party at Mar-a-Lago as thousands hit food banks amid shutdown | The Independent

President Donald Trump has attended his second extravagant party at Mar-a-Lago in a week as tens of thousands of federal employees go without pay, leaving some of them, and many more Americans, to turn to food banks amid the longest government shutdown in history.

Images of the president were shared by guests on social media Friday at the lavish event which featured a three-course menu of beef filet, truffle dauphinoise, pan-seared scallops and a trio of desserts including “Trump chocolate cake.”

For this second Photo Challenge, MISS SL ♛ Italy, it was inspired by the Daruma dolls and the bright colors and neon signs of the Japanese cities.

This outfit is extravagant, colorful and contrasts with different items of clothing.

The rigorous and significant Kimono (by Tomoto), meets a decidedly casual latex mini skirt (by Rowne).

The important, extravagant and impressive hairstyle (by BooN), welcomes and supports a colorful Neko mask and a very traditional headpiece (by Modern Couture). The hairstyle is embellished with flowers (by Mandala) and Sticks (by Mandala).

The earrings (by Mandala) recall the red tassels present on the Neko Mask and the colors of the entire outfit.

The legs are wrapped in a harness of red latex (by Shi), which recalls the Latex mini Skirt.

The very extravagant shoes (by Konpeitou) are in the shape of Daruma and fully represent the entire outfit, being decorated with Neon finishes and representing the theme chosen for this challenge.

The Cloud Halo place behind the back is of Mary Kado.

A beautiful and inevitable gold Katana (by Mandala) goes to close the whole outfit.

Neo Japan, for Miss SL Italy, should meet the tradition, the contemporaneity and the globalization of the fashion world. Be influenced by different styles and combine (contrast) completely different items of clothing.

A style, bizarre, with a background story, which is not in bad taste and never vulgar.

Never neglect the customs and traditions of your country ... reinvent and bring to new light for create a unique style.
