Yomeimon Gate 陽明門
This gate is the most extravagantly decorated gate in Japan. There are 508 carvings on the Gate, including dragons, flying horses and other mythical beasts in the upper reaches of the building, with carvings of people on the lower levels. These carvings of people portray political ideals and wisdom as well as praising the achievements of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu in creating an era of peace and prosperity in Japan. One of the pillars to the left at the back of the Gate is upside down. It is said that this was done deliberately so that the Gate could not be considered complete, since completion would invite bad luck.
Despite the scorching heat, in these days
you're the only thing I've been looking forward to...

This was taken last weekend. The style is quite different from the previous ones. I like the bokeh that is like a paint-brushed touch, also the strong light. Because it interprets my recent longing for this coming summer :)

Love the lyrics and melody of this song, 好想要揮霍 (which means "so wanna get extravagant"). The music's composed by the singer in the clip; and the lyrics is written by an excellent femaleTaiwanese singer/song-writer. The song is talking more in an emotional way, not in a materialistic way as the name might mislead you. One day I might try to translate it into English... :p
For Lancia, the Aprilia, produced from 1937 - 1949, simultaneously marked the end of one era and the beginning of another. Technologically speaking, this was a supremely refined model, with a load-bearing body, a compact narrow V engine, independent suspension on all four wheels and extremely innovative aerodynamic lines.
During the 1920s, the invention of wind tunnels allowed industrial designers to seek new levels of performance for motor vehicles by improving their aerodynamics. In the United States, “streamline design” was all the rage, a trend for producing sinuous and aerodynamic lines, starting with airplanes, then trains and then cars, increasing their speed but also emphasizing their extravagant stylistic features.
This movement reached Italy in the 1930s when streamlining, a symbol of modernity, inspired the lines of the new Lancia Aprilia. But compared to the American style, Vincenzo Lancia’s trusted designer Battista Falchetto - who had shared the honors for the stunning design of the Lambda - created a car with fewer frills and more concrete lines, aimed at improving aerodynamics. The grille and windscreen were therefore slightly inclined, and the egg shape - considered at the time the most efficient profile from an aerodynamic point of view - gave character to the rear part. The compact and streamlined bonnet was made possible by the small size of the narrow V engine... an authentic concentrate of technology. It consisted of a light alloy monobloc with cast iron barrels, V valves controlled by rockers moved by an overhead camshaft and a hemispherical top on the combustion chamber. With only 1,352 cc it generated 48 HP which, thanks also to a total weight of only 850 kg, plus an excellent aerodynamic coefficient of just 0.47, thrust the Aprilia up to 125 km/h.
The Aprilia was a true Piedmontese aristocrat, refined and precise in every detail. Its famous four pillarless doors, a true Lancia icon, also have an extraordinary curved profile and invisible hinges. The famous click - the sound of the doors closing - underlined the scrupulous attention to the smallest details in design and assembly which typified Lancia’s outstanding modus operandi, providing an unforgettable grace note. The interiors, especially in the Luxury version, featured a classy geometric instrument panel on a grey background with black and white graphics: the square speedometer and clock perfectly matched with the rectangles chosen for the thermometer and the fuel gauge. The Lancia cloth upholstery (available on request in leather), the door panels, the roof covering and the rubber mats were the final touches of a creation which was the closest possible motorcar version of the classic Turin interiors of the period.
Its extremely low weight was mainly due to the load-bearing body: a Lancia patent - first seen in the 1920s on the Lambda - which, by overcoming the classic architecture which kept the chassis and bodywork separate, improved torsional rigidity and significantly reduced volumes. The independent suspension on all four wheels, with rear transversal leaf spring and front coil springs, enabled the Lancia Aprilia to offer road grip and passenger comfort that was much superior to most of its contemporary rivals.
The Lancia Aprilia contained all the most innovative and refined technical solutions that were so dear to Vincenzo Lancia. It constituted a pinnacle of motorcar production, carried out under the direct supervision of the founder of the Turin company. The name of the car came from that of an ancient Lazio town: a characteristic that linked it to its predecessors, the Artena and the Astura.
The Lancia Aprilia was presented to the public at the thirtieth edition of the Paris Motor Show, in October 1936. On February 15, 1937 its creator had a sudden and fatal heart attack, just before the car went into production. He was only 55 years old. Thus the Aprilia became universally seen as the spiritual testament of Vincenzo Lancia, becoming a huge commercial success, which continued even after the adversities of the second World War.
The first series of the Lancia Aprilia was produced from 1937 to 1939 in 10,354 units: a Sedan in standard and Luxury trims, to which were added 4,350 chassis for custom-made versions, on which the best Italian coachbuilders reveled in producing streamlined and elegant spiders and cabriolets. Pinin Farina's aerodynamic coupé was highly original, with its characteristic flattened muzzle, the central position of the 2 + 2 passenger compartment and an elegant tail.
Two years after the start of production, the second series was born, characterized by the increase in displacement to 1,486 cc. The power remained unchanged, but this improved the elasticity of the engine and the maximum speed. Despite a weight increase to 950 kg, it gained 1 km/h. In the decade from 1939-1949, 11,082 sedans were produced plus 2,252 chassis for coachbuilders.
The production of the Aprilia continued - with a further 703 exemplars - even after the Second World War, a period in which the model, despite being almost ten years old, could still be proud of its highly modern mechanics and settings. It held its place in the market right up to the last days of production, and in racing it remained the undisputed dominator of the Tourism class up to 1500 cc for years: it also triumphed in the Mille Miglia of 1947 thanks to its powerful acceleration and peerless road holding.
To this day, more than eighty years after its presentation, the Aprilia is considered a timeless pioneering car which, by gathering all the best of Lancia’s innovative philosophy, inaugurated a new era in motoring. Vincenzo Lancia was usually hypercritical about his cars, but after test driving the Aprilia prototype he spontaneously exclaimed: "What a magnificent car!".

This week’s theme is an excuse to be extravagant in color. Here is my answer to the theme.

Maybe the sleep deprivation was beginning to kick in rather more decisively than I realised as I stood at the edge of the fjord. As I faced across the water, looking up at the mountain beacon that brings so many people to this wild and remote corner of the world, the sky seemed to be filled with strange alien craft, an invasion of cigar shaped forms hovering silently above the unworldly landscape at the edge of the North Atlantic. After nearly thirty-six hours of barely any sleep at all, during which we’d spent about nine of them in the car and three more on the plane, perhaps I was hallucinating. But then again, I reminded myself I was back in Iceland. Everything is different in Iceland. The shapes in the sky weren’t a figment of an insomnia fuelled imagination. Those clouds were real.
This first afternoon, when we made straight for Kirkjufell after checking in and hastily stuffing down a couple of ham and tomato wraps to keep the hunger gremlins at bay, was offering gifts from the very start. After trudging around the marshes to the west, and then stopping at the classic waterfall composition, we turned up our noses at the invitation to part with a thousand krona for the new car park, and instead made for a layby on the road back to Grundarfjörður that we’d spotted earlier. It turned out to be a very useful spot in which to abandon the car because the path back towards the lake and the waterfall area was just long enough to be enjoyable without becoming tiresome. And besides that, there was another big plus as far as I was concerned, and that came in the shape of a third angle from where to train my lens upon the famous landmark in front of me. In fact Kirkjufell itself has the look of some curious intergalactic invader from this position too. Resisting the urge to race back to the apartment and start making sculptures from large mounds of mashed potato, I rubbed my eyes to make sure I hadn’t in fact fallen asleep on that squashed up chair in the main concourse at Luton Airport. Besides which, even potatoes cost a small fortune in Iceland.
While Lee closed his eyes in the passenger seat of the car and tried to reacquaint himself with the concept of shuteye, I set up the tripod low to the water and began to watch as one breezy blast after another chased across its surface, ripples racing over the fjord to create a bowl of textures at my feet. By now, even though I was running on fumes, I barely felt tired at all. Excitement at being back in Iceland was the overriding sensation that kept me clicking away in a contented frenzy, as others arrived to stand and stare a while before moving on. Unlike the waterfall zone, I didn’t have to compete for space or wait my turn to take my shot - I could spread my belongings extravagantly over the small pebbly beach and enjoy the moment. Once I’d finished, I returned to the car, tapped on the window and disturbed the Sleeping Beauty, telling him I was going to walk along the path back towards the lake. A grunt of acknowledgement came from the other side of the window and his eyes closed over again. Who needs sleep when the soul is thirsting for brand new compositions in the ultimate tog’s playground?
It was another edit that seemed to be an awful struggle at first. The only thing I was certain of was that we were again in monochrome territory, as there was barely a hint of colour anywhere, apart from a strangle bluish tint to those extraterrestrial clouds. The shadows were proving to be a particularly challenging aspect of what had been a lively old dynamic range. Quite often I might be quite happy to work with a silhouette in a situation like this, but I wanted something of those lumps, bumps and distinctive layers towards the summit. For a long time I felt as if I wasn’t getting anywhere at all, but those clouds were so extraordinary that I refused to concede and consign the exercise to the bin. Finally the crop tool came to the rescue. I then agonised over whether to go with the thirty-five millimetre image of Kirkjufell alone, or the wider one that brought in the land from the left on the other side of the road and delivered added context. Ultimately a tiny white speck, barely visible on the road between the land masses made the decision to go with the wide option for me. Can you see it? In a sense it doesn’t matter, because I know it’s there - a car with its headlights on, heading towards town and bringing scale to this extraordinary landscape. And above, dead centre in the sky the mother ship makes a flamboyant swirl towards the earth, as if it might just start to hoover up the mountains one by one.
There’s the imagination running riot again. But then again, anything seems possible in a place like this, either with or without sleep.

Famous hummingbird restricted to the Andean cloud forest of northern Peru. Due to its extravagant tail, its blue crown and its iridescent green throat, the male of this species is one of the most spectacular birds in the world. Occasionally sheds its distinctive tail feathers, so it is common to see males without one or both "racquets", or with one much longer than the other. The female is mainly green above and white below; best identified by combination of: white patch behind eye, mottled throat, and slightly elongated tail feathers with rounded tips. Feeds on flowers at low to mid levels, usually on edges or in clearings.
The smooth background is a distant mountain.

Back in the day, hood ornaments were statements, and often pretty extravagant. One of the most beautiful I have seen, this one adorned the grill of a 4-Door Town Sedan, one of 10,717 cars that Cadillac sold that year. By 1931 Cadillac had become a prestige brand, and the Town Sedan would sell for $2845 base price. This car was purchased for $225 in 1962 and fabulously restored, shown and much awarded, before it was donated to the collection of the AACA Museum in Hershey, PA. If you are in South-east/Central PA and like old, notable, interesting cars, I highly recommend this museum.

The Fontanka a left branch of the river Neva, flows through the whole of Central Saint Petersburg, Russia. Until the mid-18th century the Fontanka River marked the southern boundary of Saint Petersburg. Along its banks stood the spacious messuages of members of the Russian Imperial Family and of the nobility, the most brilliant being the Summer Palace and the Anichkov Palace. In 1780–1789 Andrey Kvasov superintended the construction of the granite embankments and approaches to the river. The river-bed was regularised as well.
Fifteen bridges span the Fontanka, including the 18th-century Lomonosov Bridge and the extravagant Egyptian Bridge. The most famous bridge, the Anichkov Bridge, carries the Nevsky Prospekt over the river.

This extravagantly carved altarpiece captures the full drama of the Crucifixion with vivid realism. Christ is suspended above, while below in the crowd the Virgin Mary faints. Roman soldiers and many onlookers complete the scene. The predella panel below shows the Nativity: Christ’s birth is contrasted with his violent death.
I remember this extravagant bouquet arriving at the front door, a sympathy gift from Ross's co-workers for his mother's passing. It was the hugest bundle of flowers I ever had seen! So I proceeded to place it in different places to see if I could get a good photo, click, click, Eventually I put in the middle of the kitchen table where it almost touched the center hanging light.
A few hours later Ross came home from work, walked into the kitchen, sat in his chair with a cup of coffee telling me of the day's gossip ... and I sat across from him, listening, and eventually I asked if he noticed anything new ...
he peered at me through the massive floral arrangement blocking his view, looked puzzled, and said "No" :))
If you've ever been to the Bellagio in Las Vegas then you know that they decorate for each season in some extravagant way. This summer's theme was Americana and these huge balloons hanging from the ceiling were part of the decor. I always love seeing what over the top idea they will come up with, and this has to be one of my favorites!
I thought this worked perfectly for the "Balloons" scavenger hunt category.

Jays look fabulous. With extravagant pink plumage, a drooping black moustache and a snazzy electric blue flash through the wings..Surprisingly, it’s a member of the crow family. But while the related ravens, rooks, crows and jackdaws all wear black funereal feathers, the Jay obviously didn’t get the memo about the dress code..The reason we see more Jays in the autumn is because they are busy. Jays are nuts about acorns and at that time of the year their favourite food is in plentiful supply

It is a splendid spring afternoon at the Barnside Nook, where the sunlight paints a picture of enchantment upon a scene. Amidst the lush spring greenery, four dear friends have come together, bedecked in their most extravagant animal costumes, ready to raise a toast with wine and carrot cake in celebration of a momentous birthday.
The nook itself is a masterpiece of careful adornment, boasting bright cushions and natural decorations that add a pop of color to the festivities. On the sidelines, a mischievous frog floaty peeks out from a bathtub overflowing with flowers, adding a dash of playful charm to the scene. Even the daffodils and candles seem to join in the merriment, rustling gently as if to whisper "happy birthday" in the breeze. It's a joyous occasion filled with laughter, love, and the kind of magic that can only be found in the company of dear friends.

The Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus), also known as the blue peafowl, is native to the Indian subcontinent. Peafowl are best known for the male's extravagant display feathers which, despite actually growing from their back, are thought of as a tail. The male peafowl aka peacock is brightly coloured, with a predominantly blue fan-like crest of spatula-tipped wire-like feathers. The long train is made up of elongated upper-tail covert feathers which bear colourful eyespots. These stiff feathers are raised into a fan and quivered in a display during courtship. (The actual tail is brown and short as in the peahen.)
The Indian peafowl lives mainly on the ground where they forage for berries, grains but also prey on snakes, lizards, and small rodents. Their loud calls make them easy to detect. They usually try to escape on foot through undergrowth and avoid flying, though they fly into tall trees to roost.
The bird is celebrated in Hindu and Greek mythology and is the national bird of India. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_peafowl

One of my most extravagant projects, this took me around the span of a year to finish completely. I have spent hours searching pictures of Corsucant, and I tried to recreate the details as accurately as possible. The lighting was what was the hardest part, as the two middle floors are lit using a kind of LED tape which I connected to the roof of each one. There are also christmas lights, LEGO lights, blacklights, and multiple flashlights used.
