Jackson's Widowbirds live in the grasslands of central Kenya and northeast Tanzania. Jackson's Widowbird males develop extravagant feathers during the mating season and males and females look distinctly different (as shown in my image flic.kr/p/2oKkPX8).

Males display at an exploded lek, where they dance on separate circles of flattened grass (sometimes worn bare) surrounding a central tuft of grass, which has been trimmed and shaped. Each male can own up to three dancing rings. When dancing, the male jumps up to 1 m above the ground, with its head thrown back, neck feathers ruffled, and tail arched forwards to touch the back of its head.

I photographed this bird from a safari vehicle while exploring the Maasai Mara. Male birds were jumping all around the car in their lek paying no attention to us at all. Some have speculated that the dancing display of these birds helped inspire the dance of the Maasai men. Whether or not this is true, it is easy to see the parallel between the dances. For me, the Jackson's Widowbird were a highlight of my trip to Kenya.

When I saw this house in the hills, all I could think of was Xanadu in Orson Welles great classic movie, “Citizen Kane”, in which Kane’s luxurious and extravagant mansion was called Xanadu.

I photographed these birds from a safari vehicle while exploring the Maasai Mara. Male birds were jumping all around the car in their lek paying no attention to us at all. There were only a few females there to watch the display, and this female took off soon after I shot this photo, seemingly unimpressed with the male despite his many efforts to keep her attention. Watching the birds perform at the lek was one of the highlights of my trip to Kenya.

Just a wee bit extravagant.

One of the pleasures of bluebells is their individual beauty: graceful, arching stems bearing delicate bells of deep colour. But when those single splashes of blue multiply to form dreamy pools of thousands of plants, fresh pleasures await. The colour and scent intensify and there is a delicious, extravagant sense of abundance after the barren winter months

A rare outing into our street of my 1/18th scale model Ferrari 250 GTO by CMC models.

I get nervous handling it as it is far and away my most expensive model. I can only imagine how owners of the real thing feel, given that the last real one sold for about 85,000 times as much as I paid for this! I don't feel quite so extravagant now.

Muffin was an unremarkable cat by most standards. He napped extravagantly and stole socks with scholarly dedication. Yet he carried a secret more shimmering than moonlight. He wrote poetry. Not with pen or keyboard, of course. Those were clumsy tools meant for clumsy humans. Muffin wrote with his whiskers.

Each dawn, he approached his canvas: the bough of an old plum tree. He would sit very still, whiskers quivering with ideas that only cats and distant stars could understand. Then, with a careful sweep, he traced delicate arcs through the air. Sometimes he flicked just one whisker, making a mark so fine it seemed like a breath. Other times he swept loops and delicate crescents.

To human eyes, it looked like nothing more than sleepy glances. To the robins in the branches above, it was a sunrise lullaby. To the worms it was a tale of soft and crumbly soil. To the wind, it was a map of forgotten breezes.

For Muffin’s poetry had no need for words. It hummed through the world in shapes and whispers.

EL VALLE, Hato Mayor.- In the Sierra de la Cordillera Oriental, in the middle of the humid forest, children of the underground waters and embraced by amber mines, there are the El Zumbador waterfalls, two wonders of nature to explore in the miner and agricultural municipality of El Valle, Hato Mayor province.

El Valle has the virtue of having the most extravagant and impressive jumps in the province of Hato Mayor, always hidden in the buffer zone of Los Haitises National Park and visited by national and foreign tourists.

It is fair to say that El Zumbador Grande and Zumbador Chiquito are the province's natural structures par excellence, due to their volume of water and their natural state of conservation.

EN

It is located in the community of Río Chiquito, in the San Rafael section, about 18 kilometers south of El Valle, which is an area rich in waterways and vegetation and with several tropical micro-climates.

The waterfalls are located on the Yanigua river, which also has the Yanigua waterfalls and the Fun-Fun, with thick waterfalls and copious forests.

The El Zumbador waterfalls with vertical waterfalls, have a difference of about 10 meters from each other, the most spectacular being El Zumbador Grande, with more than 35 meters of waterfall and a depth of up to three meters in the center from the pond.

The name comes from the sound that the water emits when it falls face down on the pond, similar to the buzz that emits the bird wings that honor its name.

One of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Seville, San Luis de los Franceses (known simply as San Luis) is an extravagantly decorated circular church in the Macarena district.

Located in the street of the same name, the church of San Luis was completed in 1730 and is dedicated to King Louis IX of France, cousin of King Fernando III of Castile and Leon (aka San Fernando of Seville – his statue is in Plaza Nueva). It recently underwent an extensive 10-year renovation, reopening to the public in 2016; the private chapel and crypt can also be visited.

Part of a Jesuit novitiate (complex of buildings where novice monks live and study) that also included a residence and school, the church has a baroque façade of brick and stone, decorated with carving like a retablo (altarpiece), and also featuring solomonic (twisted) columns, two towers and a dome. Originally a plaza was going to be built in front of the church, so that the façade could be appreciated - like Plaza del Salvador - but this never materialised.

Inside, the deconsecrated church is a Greek cross shape with a cupola and 16 solomonic columns (so that effectively it feels circular). Your attention is immediately grabbed by four extravagantly carved and heavily gilted retablos, inset with paintings – King Louis IX’s image is topped by a huge crown. The effect is 360-degree dramatic and theatrical - typical Sevillano baroque.

The Sevillano architect Leonardo de Figueroa, who designed San Luis, was also responsible for such renowned buildings in the city as Palacio San Telmo, Hospital de la Caridad and Hospital de los Venerables, as well as the façade of El Salvador church, while the retablos are by Pedro Duque Cornejo, of the Roldan sculptor family.

Continuing the focus on shoes with this echo of a wonderful, extravagant night out! This time the shoe design is quite recent, from the disco nights of the 1990s!

For Lancia, the Aprilia, produced from 1937 - 1949, simultaneously marked the end of one era and the beginning of another. Technologically speaking, this was a supremely refined model, with a load-bearing body, a compact narrow V engine, independent suspension on all four wheels and extremely innovative aerodynamic lines.

During the 1920s, the invention of wind tunnels allowed industrial designers to seek new levels of performance for motor vehicles by improving their aerodynamics. In the United States, “streamline design” was all the rage, a trend for producing sinuous and aerodynamic lines, starting with airplanes, then trains and then cars, increasing their speed but also emphasizing their extravagant stylistic features.

This movement reached Italy in the 1930s when streamlining, a symbol of modernity, inspired the lines of the new Lancia Aprilia. But compared to the American style, Vincenzo Lancia’s trusted designer Battista Falchetto - who had shared the honors for the stunning design of the Lambda - created a car with fewer frills and more concrete lines, aimed at improving aerodynamics. The grille and windscreen were therefore slightly inclined, and the egg shape - considered at the time the most efficient profile from an aerodynamic point of view - gave character to the rear part. The compact and streamlined bonnet was made possible by the small size of the narrow V engine... an authentic concentrate of technology. It consisted of a light alloy monobloc with cast iron barrels, V valves controlled by rockers moved by an overhead camshaft and a hemispherical top on the combustion chamber. With only 1,352 cc it generated 48 HP which, thanks also to a total weight of only 850 kg, plus an excellent aerodynamic coefficient of just 0.47, thrust the Aprilia up to 125 km/h.

The Aprilia was a true Piedmontese aristocrat, refined and precise in every detail. Its famous four pillarless doors, a true Lancia icon, also have an extraordinary curved profile and invisible hinges. The famous click - the sound of the doors closing - underlined the scrupulous attention to the smallest details in design and assembly which typified Lancia’s outstanding modus operandi, providing an unforgettable grace note. The interiors, especially in the Luxury version, featured a classy geometric instrument panel on a grey background with black and white graphics: the square speedometer and clock perfectly matched with the rectangles chosen for the thermometer and the fuel gauge. The Lancia cloth upholstery (available on request in leather), the door panels, the roof covering and the rubber mats were the final touches of a creation which was the closest possible motorcar version of the classic Turin interiors of the period.

Its extremely low weight was mainly due to the load-bearing body: a Lancia patent - first seen in the 1920s on the Lambda - which, by overcoming the classic architecture which kept the chassis and bodywork separate, improved torsional rigidity and significantly reduced volumes. The independent suspension on all four wheels, with rear transversal leaf spring and front coil springs, enabled the Lancia Aprilia to offer road grip and passenger comfort that was much superior to most of its contemporary rivals.

The Lancia Aprilia contained all the most innovative and refined technical solutions that were so dear to Vincenzo Lancia. It constituted a pinnacle of motorcar production, carried out under the direct supervision of the founder of the Turin company. The name of the car came from that of an ancient Lazio town: a characteristic that linked it to its predecessors, the Artena and the Astura.

The Lancia Aprilia was presented to the public at the thirtieth edition of the Paris Motor Show, in October 1936. On February 15, 1937 its creator had a sudden and fatal heart attack, just before the car went into production. He was only 55 years old. Thus the Aprilia became universally seen as the spiritual testament of Vincenzo Lancia, becoming a huge commercial success, which continued even after the adversities of the second World War.

The first series of the Lancia Aprilia was produced from 1937 to 1939 in 10,354 units: a Sedan in standard and Luxury trims, to which were added 4,350 chassis for custom-made versions, on which the best Italian coachbuilders reveled in producing streamlined and elegant spiders and cabriolets. Pinin Farina's aerodynamic coupé was highly original, with its characteristic flattened muzzle, the central position of the 2 + 2 passenger compartment and an elegant tail.

Two years after the start of production, the second series was born, characterized by the increase in displacement to 1,486 cc. The power remained unchanged, but this improved the elasticity of the engine and the maximum speed. Despite a weight increase to 950 kg, it gained 1 km/h. In the decade from 1939-1949, 11,082 sedans were produced plus 2,252 chassis for coachbuilders.

The production of the Aprilia continued - with a further 703 exemplars - even after the Second World War, a period in which the model, despite being almost ten years old, could still be proud of its highly modern mechanics and settings. It held its place in the market right up to the last days of production, and in racing it remained the undisputed dominator of the Tourism class up to 1500 cc for years: it also triumphed in the Mille Miglia of 1947 thanks to its powerful acceleration and peerless road holding.

To this day, more than eighty years after its presentation, the Aprilia is considered a timeless pioneering car which, by gathering all the best of Lancia’s innovative philosophy, inaugurated a new era in motoring. Vincenzo Lancia was usually hypercritical about his cars, but after test driving the Aprilia prototype he spontaneously exclaimed: "What a magnificent car!".

Excerpt from the plaque:

Yomeimon Gate 陽明門

This gate is the most extravagantly decorated gate in Japan. There are 508 carvings on the Gate, including dragons, flying horses and other mythical beasts in the upper reaches of the building, with carvings of people on the lower levels. These carvings of people portray political ideals and wisdom as well as praising the achievements of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu in creating an era of peace and prosperity in Japan. One of the pillars to the left at the back of the Gate is upside down. It is said that this was done deliberately so that the Gate could not be considered complete, since completion would invite bad luck.
