Inspired by the stone and ceramic scarab beetles I saw at the Met Museum in NYC last year, I began to create my own version of Ancient Historical Artifacts. (Considering some of the journals I shredded were from 1995, I'd say that's a pretty accurate description.)
I am in love with the colors of blue used in Egyptian art and did my best to create my own version of them.
I had to use heavy shears to cut these forms out of the thick sheets - really hard on the hands. I also painted each individual piece.
My first experiments were with watercolor & gouache, but the paint soaked in more than I liked so I switched to acrylic.
On some pieces not shown, (saved for future works) I covered them in a matte clear coat to preserve the surface and then painted the edges gold.

When you begin to face your mortality you realize you are running out of time. The life expectancy for women in my family is not great. . . I have already outlived most on my family tree so I am always feeling like I am running out of time to create and that scares me! I am not afraid of dying as I have a strong faith and believe there is more than just this plain of living; however, I have so many unfinished projects. . .
The pearls symbolise tears, from an old wedding superstition, the wilting lily symbolises death and the tattered, damaged shoes, symbolise being worn down, the discarded ring symbolises the discarded marriage. The closed door symbolises closure, no return.
