Since first learning about the origin of art (Paris in the 1880s), I have been in a battle with my mind and its ever-changing definitions of the genre of Impressionism and Expressionism.
To me, impressionism and expressionism are one and the same, but I am not an professor of any art department (unfortunately), so what is your opinion?

Okay, okay, maybe the two giant Hofmanns were indistinguishable in level from this outstanding Gottlieb. I wouldn't argue. It is still good to see that despite the lack of equal attention in the marketplace or scholarship, Gottlieb cannot be denied. Congratulations to the curators for this enlightening perspective on a period I cut my eye teeth on and thought I knew. The quality is uneven from piece to piece, but can't be faulted for its inclusiveness. Quite the opposite. It is eye opening and a timely answer to the recent Action Abstraction show.
It may not say so in the catlogue essays, but the exhibition at MOMA of Abstract Expressionism acknowledges in fact if not word that Adolf Gottlieb was the best of them with the possible exception of Hans Hofmann. This is evidenced by the number of great works in the show by this great master.
The painting above was my personal favorite from the several of his that were displayed. Of all the Abstract Expressionists, his work, Motherwell, Hofmann, and Pollock stood out as being the highest level and the most original of the painters. David Smith, no surprise, stood out among the sculptors.
The show is extensive and inclusive of many media and artists that are not often remembered as belonging to this group, and when thought of from a painting perspective, I guess they aren't, but from the period and the philosophy of that time they certainly were, John Cage, and Len Lye for example.
This is a major survey of that moment when the United States moved into prominence as an artistic force in the world.
The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Building at No. 1, Queen's Road Central, Hong Kong. While technically British-based, HSBC's CEO office is located both in Hong Kong and London, and one can easily argues that HSBC is as much a Hong Kong bank as a British bank.
Designed by Sir Norman Foster in the 1980s, the building remains one of the most futuristic and innovative buildings even 30 years after it was conceived. Its main vertical structure includes 4 layers of exposed columns and trusses. Office space is then created by extending floor space across each level from one column to other, and also between each of the 4 layers of vertical support. You can think of it like two chocolate filling biscuits standing vertically. The biscuits forms the main vertical support, whereas the chocolate fillings between the biscuits are the floors providing the office space.
What you see is what you get: a grapefruit! Actually, half of it, I've had the other half already. :D
A nice slice of grapefruit on my breakfast table. Here it is, smiling back at you. :) Nothing special, no hidden catch, no elaborate compo. It's *just* Mr. Grapefruit himself.
Here he is, Artiste Canine Beaufere, at his one pooch show, June 9, 2007, in Muskegon. The noted tail painter was featured at the Clay St. Station, Skeetown's most prestigious gallery and former gas station. With him was his handler and human muse, Dr. Ofah.
Beaufere, who is 126 years old in dog years, --- or do I mean human years? --- is currently in negotiation with Hackley Public Library to appear at a children's program.

I made these imaginal portraits of the rock bands CHICOSCI, FASPITCH, DEATH BY STEREO, SIN, and SWITCH by commission from Pulp magazine.
Original concept was to tie the entire feature with a big nod to German Expressionist cinema.
