With my recent show at WOA in Bampton over, I've been sorting through my old work yet again. Oil pastel drawings are a very important aspect of my creative practice and seem to intersect with almost every phase of my output in some way. I enjoy their vibrancy and their lush colour harmonies . America was the early great inspiration for my work, my travels took me all over the USA and Canada and then I reworked and revised these ideas when back in Britain, forming a series of folk art inspired drawings. I guess David Hockney's work was a big influence (and still is), maybe Grant wood, Burchfield, Fauvism and German expressionism. Often these works are harsh to my eyes today, but I'd like them to be viewed in relation to each other, and not compared with my more conventional work.

My wife and I had a round-the-world holiday in 1998. On our travels besides catching up with family and friends, I also made it out to meet up with a number of well known artist friends whom I had been writing and emailing for a number of years.

This is a photo of the well known French outsider artist, Ody Saban in her Paris studio apartment. She is very passionate about her art when showing it to others. Here she is thumbing through a small stack to share with the rest of us.

Almost all of the artwork I have been working on for the past half year has ended up focusing on gaining more control and precision. While some of the results have been good, I also suddenly realize that I have been giving up something portion of the magic that only happens through uncontrolled spontaneity.

This painting is an attempt to force myself to lose control and gain some of that magic.

In the realm where dreams blend with reality, "Whispers of the Dreaming Soul" emerges as a profound exploration of the ethereal dance between the conscious and the subconscious. Through vibrant hues, daring shapes, and emotive textures, this collection invites you on a journey deep into the heart of human emotion, where the lines between the seen and unseen are beautifully blurred. Each piece serves as a gateway to understanding the unspoken dialogues within us, offering a unique perspective on the continuum of existence. As you immerse yourself in this exquisite display, allow the whispers of the dreaming soul to guide you through a landscape of inner discovery and transcendental beauty.

Poem:

Upon the Canvas of the Night

In strokes of shadow, bursts of light,

A dreamer paints the soul's flight,

Where fears and hopes in colors bright,

Entwine in dance, dispel the plight.

In depths where silent whispers dwell,

Beneath the conscious, surface swell,

Emotions in rebellion yell,

Yet in the chaos, beauty's spell,

Weaves tales that only art can tell.

A journey through the heart's domain,

Where joy meets sorrow, pleasure, pain,

And through the tempest, calm again,

The canvas holds, in every stain,

The essence of the dreamer's reign.

Within this realm, no boundaries known,

Where seeds of unseen worlds are sown,

Expression's purest form is shown,

And through such art, we're gently thrown

Into realms to us, previously unknown.

Haiku:

Dreams weave through the void,

Colours blend, emotions swirl,

Souls speak without words.

Since first learning about the origin of art (Paris in the 1880s), I have been in a battle with my mind and its ever-changing definitions of the genre of Impressionism and Expressionism.

To me, impressionism and expressionism are one and the same, but I am not an professor of any art department (unfortunately), so what is your opinion?
