The 'Floating Heads' installation by Sophie Cave are from Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum in Glasgow, which I recently visited for the first time, despite living near the city for the last few years.

The picture in the comments shows them in a more accurate context of where they are in the gallery layout. Quite an unusual sight!

After spending a weekend in Boston, surrounded by the beautiful artwork of my friend Nathan Miner, I was inspired to revisit my last attempts at abstract expressionism.

Style: Early Die Brücke Expressionism

Painted in 1906, The Little House exemplifies Schmidt-Rottluff’s early Expressionist explorations with Die Brücke, where he sought to convey emotional directness through simplified forms and bold colour, rejecting academic traditions.

Key Characteristics

- Simplified composition with flattened perspective exaggerating the picture plane.

- Vibrant, non-naturalistic palette of contrasting hues to signal emotional intensity.

- Energetic, impastoed brushwork revealing the artist’s physical engagement with paint.

- Angular, geometric shapes outlining the house and surroundings, reflecting woodcut aesthetics.

- Emphasis on structural rhythm over realistic detail, collapsing foreground and background.

Bonn Museum of Modern Art, Germany, was founded in 1947. The Kunstmuseum exhibits both temporary exhibitions and its collection. Its collection is focused on Rheinish Expressionism and post-war German art. It is part of Bonn's "Museum Mile". The present building, which opened in 1992, was created by the BJSS firm (Axel Schultes) and Jürgen Pleuser. It has three entrances, symbolizing openness. The design of the staircase has been described as a "precise geometry, cut like jewellery. The conception of light brings the collection to life." The total exhibition area is around 4,000 m2.

Both the architecture and the collections it houses convey their pleasure in mutual existence. Neither are in competition with the other; both find their expression in coalition with the building. The Kunstmuseum Bonn is the most important postwar museum construction, making it the culmination of the museum boom in Germany. The building is an architectural end-in-itself as well as a conservational shell. It makes high claims for itself, but also for the collections. Schultes operates openly. His concept of light brings the collection to life. Light streams through the rooms as though poured from a watering can. It was the architecture that made the museum internationally known. In interplay with Gustav Peichl's building, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the German Republic that faces it, it enhances its own specific valence as architecture. Two of the major collections of the Bonn Art Museum are "August Macke and the Rheinish Expressionists" and works of internationally recognized representatives of German art since 1945.

Portrait of Robin Williams. Mostly about practicing facial anatomy. Not 100% happy with the shape of the face. I think I am still off a little. On the other hand, I do not want to do something that is photorealistic. I want it to remain expressionistic. So, in that regard, maybe I am making things more complicated. Overthinking it.

Hate the shirt, but since it wasn't the point of this project, I decided to leave it. Same with the background. Mixed feelings about the hair elements.

I am happier with the flow of lines around the face. I think I am improving in that regard, if only by degrees. The lines feel like they are flowing more naturally than in my last couple of portraits.

expressionism in Berlin

for the guesswhereberlin group by anoniman9876

Munch based this painting on mid summer celebrations at Aasgardstrand in his native Norway. The woman in white, who looks like the artist's girlfriend Tulla Larson, symbolizes virginity, the woman in red stands for carnal knowledge and the figure in black, gazing jealously at the dancers, represents old age. The distorted outlines and the symbolic use of color in this work are typical of Munch and are exemplified most famously by his work THE SCREAM.
