An eye can threaten like a loaded and levelled gun, or it can insult like hissing or kicking; or, in its altered mood, by beams of kindness, it can make the heart dance for joy.... One of the most wonderful things in nature is a glance of the eye; it transcends speech; it is the bodily symbol of identity.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
The intensity of her expressions are priceless! The passion for her music undeniable.
She is Andrea Brook, Associate Director of MASS Ensemble, yoga teacher, spiritual counselor and life coach.
I met her during the week long "Cirque Alys Aerial Music" event at Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, on the University of Alabama campus at Birmingham, where I did a photo shoot. She is a lovely person!
Throughout the week there were two free performance by the group on an outdoor stage erected in Engel Plaza., in which Andrea stroked the stings of the Earth Harp, a unique instrument designed by William Close, the artistic director of MASS Ensemble. On Friday night there was a full concert, the first part which took place in beautiful Jemison Hall and the second part which took place on the outdoor stage, under the stars. It was magical!
Andrea has been associated with, and toured internationally with MASS Ensemble since 2001. She is a talented musician and dancer, as well as the voice and writer behind the spoken word elements of their show.
In addition to her musical talent Andrea has visited India many times and studied Yoga, and its many styles, under a number of Yoga masters. Her Yoga web site is: www.yogagirl.com.
The Earth Harp, at which Andrea is so proficient, is the largest stringed
instrument on the planet.
The body of the instrument, in these photos rests on the stage, and the
strings travel out over the audience attaching tthe Alys Stephens Center building, turning
the whole surrounding outdoor space into the instrument.
The giant long
strings are played with violin rosin covered gloves.
As Andrea runs her gloved hands along the strings
it creates beautiful cello like
tones.
Each string is sized and tuned individually using wooden blocks attached at certain points to stop the vibration.
The shorter strings makes shorter waves and higher sounds, while the larger, longer strings make longer waves and lower sounds.
The reason its inventor, William Close, chose to call it the Earth Harp is because the first time it was installed, the strings ran from one side of a valley, 1,000 ft. across to the other side, turning the
Earth / landscape into a giant harp.
There are a number YouTube videos of both Andrea and William playing the Earth Harp, but there are three I will recommend to you.
The first is Andrea explaining what Cirque Alys Aerial Music week is all about: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAmly-BC90w
The second one is Andrea playing the Earth Harp at the annual gathering of "Burning Man" in the Nevada desert (if you have never heard of Burning Man, google it. It is quite a happening!)

and the third is Andrea in Italy, with William Close, giving a very good explanation of, and playing, the Earth Harp:

Benjamin Zander working with the five year old violinist Leia Zhu on Paganini's Cantabile during the fourth day of music workshops organised by The Avison Ensemble.
The Avison Ensemble is delighted to have welcomed Benjamin Zander to present a series of music workshops in Newcastle for musicians and listeners as part of our ongoing commitment to music learning in the North East. These workshops were held from 13th to 16th August 2012 in Newcastle University’s King’s Hall; they were open to amateur and professional musicians of all ages and to listeners, including those with no previous experience of classical music.
These workshops were transformative and inspirational for the musicians participating as they discovered new possibilities in interpretation, expression and performance. Ben explored the ‘hidden language’ of music and the impact of its use on both performers and listeners. However, these were not technical master classes – they were full of surprises and often emotional experiences which transformed the audience and players’ outlook on the relationship of music to life.
The Avison Ensemble is the outstanding period instrument orchestra based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which plays and popularises the music of Charles Avison (1709-1770) and other English classical composers of the Baroque period, such as Garth, Arne and Herschel. The Ensemble also performs Purcell, Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli, Geminiani, Pergolesi, Teleman, Rameau, Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The Ensemble is strongly committed to music learning in North East England and has an active education programme and its own annual Young Musicians’ Awards competition.
Ben Zander is the acclaimed conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and a passionate musician and speaker of world renown. He has collaborated in performances with many of the world’s greatest musicians, amongst whom have been Rostropovich, Oscar Shumsky, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Martha Argerich, Yo-Yo Ma, and Jaqueline Du Pré.
Ben’s work with young people and youth orchestras is world renowned and he has recently been awarded the Youth Orchestra of the Americas 10th anniversary award for his invaluable contribution to the youth symphony movement across the Americas. He has recently formed the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra to “… shape the musical leadership of tomorrow”.
Ben is one of the most sought-after speakers in the world. Bringing his insights as the conductor of major symphony orchestras to business leaders involved in transformation and change, Ben has become a much sought-after speaker to major organizations all over the world including Shell, IBM, Arthur Andersen, KPMG, Sprint, NASA and the US Army.

Taken during the 10th Chennai Photowalk. I was planning to capture expressions of people as declared in my blog Smiling at Strangers
This is one of my first attempts at Jump Photography. As you can see the timing wasn't perfect . And the jump was free style too without any synchronization ! Still I love the expressions!... This one is unedited but have plans to edit it into a better picture.
If anyone knows chimpanzee facial expressions I would love to know the emotions going on here.
Nori (the baby) was running around causing a disturbance and the rest of the troop was running around making noises.
~Update~ This is Ruthie and her caregiver told me this about the facial expressions:
"First expression showing teeth is a fear grimace. The second was a vocalization, probably an alarm call if the group was wound up but could be a couple of other things. The last is just Ruthies relaxed or tired face"
MUCH appreciated EGM!
