Celebration of Light Fireworks Display on English Bay
From Century Plaza Hotel, 26th floor
[July 29 display; my camera was on Eastern time]
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
This is another of the several fireworks photos I took while in Vancouver, the result of (1) just happening to be in the city for the first night of the annual Celebration of Light annual international competition; (2) having a hotel room with a good view of English Bay, where the fireworks were launched; and (3) having a tripod (travel tripod bought for this trip), so I could set up on the hotel room balcony. This was my first attempt at photographing fireworks, partly because I tend to avoid the sorts of crowds that go with such displays, a problem overcome by being able to stay in the hotel. With the 24-70mm lens at 70mm (longer would have been nice), polarizer in place, and settings of f/11 and ISO 100 (80%) or 160 (20%), I used shutter speeds between 2 seconds and 5 second (most at 3.2 seconds, it turned out). We saw the display of Japan, the ultimate winner, on July 29 (ignore the July 30 date at the right; my camera was on EDT, and fireworks started at 10:00 PDT); UK and Canadian displays were on August 2 and 5. I won't be trying to photograph today's eclipse, but this no doubt is more colorful. Dad would have been 100 today, and I'm recalling his 60th birthday, spent at my house; his cousin, born the same date 12 years later, was there as well. We put 108 candles on a cake for them -- also a bright display.

Une convergence s'est mise en place à peine à l'Est de Saint-Tropez, ce qui a pour conséquence d'engendrer des convections très profonde à tel point qu'a l'œil nu je voyais le nuage s'enrouler tout en montant comme s'il y avait une éruption volcanique !
Plus tard je recenserai plus de 5 trombes marines ainsi qu'un déluge de foudre ramifié complètement dingue .
