I've been studying rock and other natural surfaces for a long time. I try to produce a "random" style in my shapes and their surfaces, and this series seems to show that I've accomplished what I'm after. The "beauty" of these pieces is perhaps up to debate, but I think at least I've accomplished an effect that transcends the human touch. There is little evidence here of "my" work or my imposition of form or surface on the natural ingredients.
These pine tiles (about 4-7 inches max.) were my first experiment using living materials with the terracotta. They are very thin, about 2-3 mm, and were rolled out with freshly fallen pine needles from New Hampshire. It smelled great in the studio.
After bisque firing, I fired with a very thin layer of Evans' BITE partially covered with a some watered-down gunmetal. I kind of scrape-dripped on a bit of copper carbonate. They looked pretty good fired up (cone 04, electric kiln) but I wanted a little more character. So after packing them up I took 'em all out of the box, gave them some cobalt blue and some fireplace ash (some with the ash mixed in, some with the ash on top, and some with the ash underneath). I like the blue I got and miscellaneous other effects.
This was part of science experiment from an Usbourne book. I just love how neatly she labeled the pots, 1-2-3.
Taken using my 10D with a Polaris Auto Zoom 80-200mm f3.5. This is an old Japanese manual-focus Pentax-mount (M42) telephoto that belonged to my Dad. It's attached using an EOS-to-M42 lens mount adapter. It's all manual, so the focus is only as good as my eyesight. I used a tripod.
Experimenting with water colour staining applied to Bragdon Enterprise rock moulds, a little way to go to improve the technique yet...
TALE (The After Lucy Experiment) : To Ride A Horse, performance at Manège de la Caserne Fonck (Liège), January 25, 2013.
About TALE (The After Lucy Experiment).
Based on an attitude of flash-strategy and ultra-availability to each other, TALE's collaborative practice aims to divert serious as well as unusual thematics. Multi-disciplinary in their approach, their work presents itself as an open questioning aiming to an emancipatory attitude towards historical and cultural events. Operating like one brain, they explore the contemporary values associated with performance at a time when it has increased resonance as a cultural phenomenon, and as a concept and metaphor in critical discourse.
Quick Note: this is a screenshot so not the full quality.**
A photoshop experiment where I was just open-ended with the direction and then it kind of took shape into this Instagram looking thing...oh well.
Experimenting with my camera and what sort of shots i can get. Really trying to get the perfect photo with my limited experience
Exposure adjusted in RAW.
Very simple lighting setup - single SB600 flash mounted on second tripod in front of sitter and at an angle to camera. Flash fired remotely using Nikon CLS.
White walls behind, but no further reflectors etc.
From the set taken at one of my first portrait sessions. We set out to try and take an 'environmental portrait', but I think it might well be closer to a 'studio shoot in someone's flat' instead.
Any comments gratefully received.

Connectivity and readymade practice : experimenting, manipulating and combining daily life objects in order to attempt, to force or to mystify a workable connection between them, at least to make it visible and/or possible. This exercise is to be considered as a warm-up, a first step towards a further installation or project.
