This is where the U.S. armed forces practiced live-fire invasion exercises for the D-Day Landings during WW2 to simulate Utah beach. The houses in the area were evacuated for the duration of the war. Start Bay is noted for the disaster during Operation TIger where a flotilla of German torpedo boats got in among the ships and landing craft and 946 American soldiers were killed during the exercise. The English Channel comes up to the shingle beach and then there's the road and beside it and the fresh water Slapton Ley. A local hotel owner, Ken Small, managed to raise an American Sherman amphibious tank from the bay and it is now at the top of the Ley in Torcross as a memorial to the dead servicemen. Ken has passed away now but he wrote a book, ''The Forgotten Dead,'' about Operation Tiger before he died.
This shot was another low-angled one, which was quite tough. When I was watching the player practice on his vertical jumps, I really liked how the shadows looked on him. So I tried to capture that moment in order to bring what I visualised in my mind to life. And so I got this, to which I am very happy to how it turned out.
