Here's a repeat of a capture from 2009...I love bringing it, and the story, back again as it brings back the wonderful memory of the visit with some old friends that I seldom see...and came back with this shot!

"Mr. Tom T. Gobble, it is my pleasure to inform you that a last minute phone call from the Governor of the State of Alabama has granted you a permanent stay of execution..."

LOL...actually this guy was never subject to becoming Thanksgiving Dinner...he and several other turkeys are the beloved pets of my friends Gladys and David and they would never let any harm come to them...they are part of their family! Many thanks to them for giving me the opportunity to have this fine fellow added to my photostream for Thanksgiving! : )

Judith and Holofernes, 1620-21

Artemisia Gentileschi

Assyrian king Nebuchadnezzar sent his general Holofernes to besiege the Jewish city of Bethulia. Judith, described as a beautiful young widow, resolves to save her people by slaying Holofernes herself. After reciting a long prayer to God, she dons her finest clothes in order to seduce him. After Holofernes has drank enough wine to become intoxicated, Judith decapitates him with his own sword, winning a decisive victory for the Israelites.

"I will show Your Illustrious Lordship what a woman can do"

In 17th-century Europe, at a time when women artists were not easily accepted, Artemisia was exceptional. She challenged conventions and defied expectations to become a successful artist and one of the greatest storytellers of her time.

Artemisia painted subjects that were traditionally the preserve of male artists and for the male gaze; transforming meek maidservants into courageous conspirators and victims into survivors.

In this first major exhibition of Artemisia’s work in the UK, see her best-known paintings including two versions of her iconic and viscerally violent ‘Judith beheading Holofernes’; as well as her self portraits, heroines from history and the Bible, and recently discovered personal letters, seen in the UK for the first time.

Execution Rocks Lighthouse is located in Long Island Sound. Legend has it that the British used to chain prisoners to the rocks at low tide and wait for them to drown as the tide came in. The lighthouse was built in the 1840's and recently handed over to a non-profit for restoration. It is a 30 minute boat ride away from the shore, and has no electricity or running water, plus it is rumored to be haunted.

Page Jupiter, charged in the murder of a white woman Evelyn Releschneider, is escorted out of the Marlboro, Maryland jail July 12, 1933 after an attempt to lynch him in LaPlata failed.

On July 11, 1933 a lynch mob formed outside the LaPlata, Maryland jail where Jupiter had been held. They stormed the jail only to find that Jupiter was no longer in the facility.

Believing that Jupiter had been spirited to the nearby courthouse, they then stormed the courthouse. After finding that Jupiter was not in the courthouse either, the mob attempted to find where he had been taken, but ultimately dispersed.

Jupiter was later taken to a Baltimore jail that was believed more secure.

Bernard Ades, the attorney in the Euel Lee case, attempted to intervene on behalf of Jupiter but was rebuffed by the court.

Jupiter was found guilty by a LaPlata jury November 23, 1933 and sentenced to death.

On February 2 1934, Jupiter was taken to the gallows at the Maryland Penitentiary in Baltimore. He fainted on his way to the gallows, but officials put the rope around the neck of his unconscious body and hanged him.

The Execution of Lady Jane Grey is an oil painting by Paul Delaroche, completed in 1833, which is now in the National Gallery in London. It was enormously popular in the decades after it was painted, but in the 20th century realist historical paintings fell from critical favour and it was kept in storage for many decades, for much of which it was thought lost. Restored and displayed again since 1975, it immediately once again became a highly popular work, especially with younger visitors.[1]

The painting portrays, erroneously in some regards, the moments preceding the death of Lady Jane Grey, who on 10 July 1553 was proclaimed Queen of England, only to be deposed nine days later and executed in 1554. Jane is sometimes referred to as the "Nine Days' Queen" due to the brevity of her reign.

O pictura deosebit de apreciata in secolul 19, Execution of Lady Jane Grey a fost realizata de Paul Delaroche in 1833. In secolul 20, stilul realist cu teme istorice scade in popularitate, pictura ajungand in depozit.

Este expusa din nou in 1975, devenind deosebit de populara mai ales in randul publicului tanar.
