An excercise to complete a painting in one session from start to finish.
I only drew circles where I wanted to put the thistle heads, the rest was done straight with the brush. The actual colour is a bit more purple than this but as I photographed this at the wrong end of the day I had to use the instant fix button to get more light in it.
The whole thing took about two hours. I deliberatly chose a difficult angle because the object of the excercise was to challenge myself.
Someone recently introduced me to boxing and it really changed me. Boxing has a reputation for its violence but I mostly stick to its recreational side, I like to 'hit the sand' because it helps you relieve a lot of stress and helps you keep yourself under control. In recent years, it really has helped me through some negative events that I went through.

A shot of Zhenya from our Fitness Shoot at Lunatic Lens studio in Phoenix on 7/29/17. A one-light setup here. A DigiBee800 camera left, a little less than four feet away from Zhenya. The light was modified with a small, gridded Chimera softbox, power not recorded. It was triggered with a Pocket Wizard. Lane held a silver reflector to Zhenya's left side!

Zhenya getting ready to do the plank during our Fitness shoot on 7/29/17 at Lunatic Lens Studio in Phoenix. She did her own makeup and hair. Great photoshoot! The main light was a DigiBee800 fired into a medium gridded strip bank, camera right. At camera left, I had a large, foam white reflector. Zhenya's rim light was an Alien Bees B1600 fired into a medium gridded strip bank, behind her, camera left. Both lights were triggered with Pocket Wizards.

Photographed pelicans and other fish eating birds along the Yakima River yesterday. They put on a great show. Some of them were almost to close for my 400 mm lens. IMG_3913

The umbrella and two flashes can be seen clearly here, as well as how it creates a nice cross-light with the sun.
Pretty clear "schoolbook excercises" from the lighting 102 series - go read yourself too :-)
