I got the idea for this image from one of my contacts, 'Charliebubbles' (Charles Welch), who did an excellent macro of a £2.00 coin.
Here we have a £1.00 coin as the main subject placed on many other coins.
I'm using some new close-up rings I've just purchased here (as I can't afford a macro lens yet), and this is a stack of 5 images to counter act the ultra shallow DoF.
Also, thanks to another contact, Brian C Parks for the cool tutorial on Focus Stacking.

Some more ramblings about the Nikkor 200mm macro (Micro) lens:
I went out today to do some hand held macro photography. Had the 200mm Micro mounted. Already a bit of a love / hate relationship with that lens.
It is VERY sharp. When you hit the focus...you nail it. (That is to say, when autofocus works just right...!)
The lens is heavy, long, and a bit awkward. It has a tedious minimum focusing distance...like 1.9 FEET. That's the next county in macro terms.
I got some really excellent macro shots...and I missed a bunch of others. The lens does not have image stabilization, so that is all on the photographer. And, when working at 1:1 true macro distance, the critical focus depth of field is microscopic...Hence very stopped down, hence high ISO for reasonable movement freezing shutter speed.
One day Nikon will update this lens for the 21st century, with full VR (stabilization) technology. And will also add in an A/M focus setting, so that when the lens won't grab focus in AF, you can rotate the manual focus ring, get to the right point and then auto focus takes over. For now, it is either full AF or full manual focus.
Not thinking about returning the lens, though. When this photographer is up to the task, the lens is magnificent.
After seeing so many excellent macro photos made with it I finally bought this magical macro lens and put it on my every day camera which up to now just saw family photos and portraits. I am still practicing shooting macros with live view and such a little camera but I am already impressed by the detail provided by this lens. That is something I don't get shooting insects with my big 100-400mm lens.

Nachdem ich so viele tolle Macros daraus gesehen hatte, habe ich nun endlich dieses magische Makro-Objektiv gekauft und auf meine kleine Jeden-Tag-Kamera gesteckt, die bis dahin nur Familienfotos und Porträts gesehen hatte. Ich übe noch daran Macros mit Live View und einer so kleinen Kamera zu schießen, aber ich bin jetzt schon beeindruckt von den Details, die das Objektiv liefert. Das ist etwas, das ich mit meinem großen 100-400mm-Objektiv nicht bekomme.
Da kommt definitiv demnächst noch mehr :-)

Sometimes I have nothing to say in the description; other times I drone on interminably. Those few on Flickr who know me at all well know how to interpret these things. The rest...ahh, well.
If you pay attention to such things...and few do, though some...you notice that once it gets to flower / insect season, my choice of gear is idiosyncratic. I have two main top quality cameras, and three almost equally excellent macro lenses. On any given day I may select any combination, which of course is six possibilities. And then I decide whether I want the mobility of hand-holding, or the slight additional precision of tripod mount.
If you search for some pattern in any of this, or even think you've found a favorite lens -- OR CAMERA -- you are way ahead of me.
And on any given day, on a lark, I might grab the older D7100 or D7000...perhaps the Nikkor 60mm micro lens, or even one of the wide angle zooms and the Raynox DCR 250.
In other words, as you've certainly realized by now, though I do occasionally take some pretty good photographs, I can really be a 'flake' about it.
This is my first anamorphic lens and I love it already. It's a vintage Sankor 16C 2x anamorphic projection adaptor for Bell & Howells 16mm projectors. It focuses down to 5ft but it needs to be focused in unison with the taking lens. Tricky!
In this case I use the cheap and sharp Nikkor AF 50/1.8D, which works a treat. But I will soon update this setup with a vintage russian HELIOS 44M 58mm f/2 lens which is supposed to be a perfect marriage with this adaptor. I got with the Sankor two dipoters, +1 and +10 which makes for some excellent macro and close portraits with the lens combo. What I lack at the moment is an adaptor to use regular threaded filters in front of the anamorphic, like Vari-ND and graduated filters. I just ordered a 58mm thread adaptor from Vid-Atlantic.com that will arrive in a week or two. The front filter thread of the Sankor is an old school 51.5mm thread used in the old Ednalite series 713 filter holder, which is what I use for the diopters.
For the monitoring I use a HDMI attached TVlogic VFM-056W which is capable of setting up custom sqeeze ratios so the monitor will display the true anamorphic signal, de-squeezed. It makes a huge difference when trying to frame and focus correctly. I also added a 2.66:1 aspect marker for cropping in post from the native 3.55:1 ratio.

My journey to find the best compact camera for me has (hopefully) finally ended. I really liked the image quality of the 1" Sony sensor in the Canon G7X, but I found the controls too simplistic, and the focus system was not nearly fast enough to catch any moving subjects, nor would it allow the kind of macro photos I enjoy taking. I loved my Olympus XZ-2, but wanted a viewfinder. Instead of buying the add on, I decided to sell it and pick up the X30 instead. It has all of the features I want - EVF, flip screen, manual controls, fast and sharp lens, excellent macro mode and great build quality. The sensor isn't as up-to-date as some of the other compacts, but it seems to do well enough to ISO 800. Since I only print 5x7 or 8x10, I think this camera will be just fine. And of course there is the intangible benefit, it just makes me want to go out and shoot :-)

El gira-sol/calo/calimero/calomero/calominador (Helianthus annuus) és una planta herbàcia de la classe dels magnoliòpsids, de la subclasse de les astèrides i de la família de les asteràcies, amb una inflorescència gran en capítol que gira al llarg del dia per a orientar-se en direcció contrària al sol. Les flors internes del capítol no són ligulades.
Es conrea per la seva llavor (la pipa de calomon), de la qual se n'obté un oli comestible.
És una planta originària de l'Amèrica boreal, especialment de Mèxic, Perú i del sud dels Estats Units que va ser introduïda a Europa durant el segle XVI i des d'aleshores el seu cultiu s'ha propagat ràpidament.
El gira-sol floreix a l'estiu, i és a la tardor quan es du a terme la recol·lecció dels fruits per aprofitar les llavors. A més, les fulles i les flors també són utilitzades en medicina.

El girasol (Helianthus annuus), también llamado calom, jáquima, maravilla, mirasol, tlapololote , maíz de teja es una planta herbácea de la familia de las Asteráceas, cultivada como oleaginosa y ornamental en todo el mundo. Debe su nombre común al hecho de que su inflorescencia gira a lo largo del día mirando hacia el sol. Las inflorescencias crecen al cabo de un tallo que puede alcanzar varios metros de altura y que tiene pocas hojas. Los pétalos pueden ser amarillos, marrones, naranjas y de otros colores.
El girasol es nativo de América, fue cultivado hacia el 1000 A.C. Los españoles lo llevaron a Europa al principio del siglo XVI.

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens is a medium-small lens and is rather light in weight. This is a very comfortable-to-carry-and-use lens. Build quality is decent but not as solid as Canon's L Series lenses.

Good snowy morning and Happy Hug a Bug Day to everyone. I know exactly what you're thinking...another mantis portrait. Sorry about that, but I promise this will be the last from 2010 to be posted. Cross my heart and hope to die :-)
While I'm positive this is a Chinese Mantis (Tenodera sinensis) I'm pretty sure it's a male from the slender abdomen that you can see in the full size pic of this large insect in the comment section. Estimated length about 4 - 5 inches (10 - 13 cm).
