Lycaena phlaeas, the small copper, American copper, or common copper, is a butterfly of the Lycaenids or gossamer-winged butterfly family. According to Guppy and Shepard (2001), its specific name phlaeas is said to be derived either from the Greek phlego, "to burn up" or from the Latin floreo, "to flourish".

with raindrops. These flowers are tiny - excellent macro practise !

They really shine On Black !

Work...gym...and a late evening walk in a nearby hill with wonderful meadows. I was lucky that some butterflies settled for the night, offering excellent macro opportunities in the soft evening light.

This is a Glanville fritillary (Melitaea cinxia, réti tarkalepke).

We are not allowed to travel to some more exotic places at the moment thanks to Covid-19 lockdown. So, I thought I have a go at photographing a fly in my backyard! Inspired by Stanley Sutton's excellent macro photography. I don't have a macro lens so I used my 100-400mm and focused as close as possible which is just 1m. Not too shabby I suppose but no match for a macro lens of course. But I will keep practicing!

Update 31-March: It seems that this fly's left eye is flat. It must have flown into something hard!

November 30, 2022. I have selected this image as my entry for Flickr’s Your Best Shot 2022. In September this was a new venture for me into macro shots which I am enjoying very much, in large part due to the excellent macro photographers here on Flickr from whom I continue to learn. This shot, set up in my home “studio” was enhanced with the focus stacking technique. Coming after a few previous experimental shots in this genre I was very proud of the outcome here. This picture subsequently featured in Flickr’s “Green” Explore Takeover in October. But the real stars of the show are the little group of acorns I had brought home that afternoon. I hope you all enjoy seeing them and my best wishes to everyone for 2023!

Vega-11U 50mm f2.8 enlarger lens from soviet era. Even wide open it is razor sharp and has veru flat field. Colors depends on lighting. On sunny day as this one they are strong and saturated.

With appropriate helicoid adapter it may be used as slower all arround lens, but it goves best reults for close ups. Excellent macro lens.

It is 5 elements in four groups lens. I did not find exact shchema. Said to be some double gauss design, but I could not validate that claim.

Bokeh looks more like Planar (Ultron) type lenses than Tessars. So, it may be some gauss design.

A couple more shots from an excellent macro jolly at Thurlbear Wood and Quarrylands with Stevie.

10 tiny candles to celebrate 10 years of the excellent Macro Mondays group. I haven't changed the colours of the flames - these candles are called Angel flames and burn in different colours!

Enlarger lenses are curious creatures. They are made to be as sharp and to have as neutral colours as possible. No coating either. At the end you do not want that your enlarger spoil that photo made with your very special lens or change its character.

Does that make them boring. Well, yes and no. Typically, they are made to perform at its peak on certain distance from the photographic paper. Not at infinity range. So ween used at that peak distance they produce very sharp and clean images. Not overly contrast. Enlarger lenses are also usually slow or very slow. That makes them not a good candidate for bokeh photos or portrait lenses. In fact, they are often see not good for anything other than macro photography. And yes, you may get yourself an excellent macro for a fraction of dedicated macro lens. But, with a lot of patience and try and error those lenses may surprise at all situations.

This Tominon 75mm f4.5 is no exception. There is nothing inherently flashy in it. But it may be gentle with the background and pop the edges if we come to a right distance.

CAT:

Project 365, 2022 Edtion: Day 265/365

Today while photographing mushrooms on a log not far from this one, I had a frightening encounter with a hornets' nest. I posted my account in Flickrology: www.flickr.com/groups/4515809@N20/discuss/72157721917369358/

A few days ago I posted another photo of this attractive cluster of fungi taken on the smartphone. It begged me to return with the new EOS RP and the excellent macro lens.

a happy smiling bokeh wednesday to us all! :-)

thanks for all your lovely comments and faves .invites and awards!

Started nature photography years ago with macro. Then moved on to avian photography.

Inspired by the numerous excellent macro work posted on FB, I recently acquired a Laowa 25mm and flash diffuser and dived back into macro work.

Lighter equipment, abundance of suitable subjects and less crowd are just some of the perks.
