Porto (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpoɾtu]) (occasionally also known as Oporto in English[4]) is the second-largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon, and one of the major urban areas in Southern Europe and the capital of the second major great urban area in Portugal. The urban area of Porto, which extends beyond the administrative limits of the city, has a population of 1.3 million (2011)[5] in an area of 389 km2 (150 sq mi),[6] making it the second-largest urban area in Portugal. The Porto Metropolitan Area includes an estimated 2 million people.[7][8][9] It is recognized as a Gamma- level global city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Study Group,[10] being one of five cities on the Iberian Peninsula with global city status, (the others being Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon and Valencia).

Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, Portus Cale,[11] has been referred to as the origin for the name "Portugal", based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin. In Portuguese the name of the city is spelled with a definite article as "o Porto" (English: the port). Consequently, its English name evolved from a misinterpretation of the oral pronunciation and referred to as "Oporto" in modern literature and by many speakers.

One of Portugal's internationally famous exports, port wine, is named for Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular the adegas of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the production and export of the fortified wine.[12] The Porto region is also a major producer of cork

All I can really say is that this show was bigger and better than I had ever hoped for. Evolve took on a life of its own and so many of the artists shared their own powerful stories of overcoming whatever life has tossed along their path.

Over 20 photographers, ceramicists and artists were part of this event. Gay, straight, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, Black Latino, White, Armenian, poor, broke, rich, wealthy, HIV positive, HIV negative and even two homeless individuals were all artists in this show. The was a direct representation of what Los Angeles looks like and together we showed why we are the City of Angels

About 400 attended the opening at Art Share-LA in Downtown Los Angeles. The event was a complete success with people coming from as far north as Sacramento as far south as San Diego. New York, Denver and even two folks from Atlanta made the trek to the Evolve opening. I was completely blown away.

Big thanks to all the artists for their beautiful pieces, my family, friends and supporters for continuing to embrace my work through Project KengiKat and Do Something Saturday and to everyone who donated and attended the event I want to say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.

Let's evolve, explore and experiment

Let's learn new skills, try new things, make huge fabulous, amazing mistakes.

Let's see things for real and then see things as only we imagine them.

Let's find our unique voices and celebrate those unique things which we each love.

Let's push each other, challenge each other and encourage each other.

Let's all be inspired. And be inspiring.

For those of you who care: this image is made with just 3 textures; each one used 2 or 3 different ways (different blending modes and masks)...8 layers in all.

Will post a full(er) color version later but still busy making mistakes.

So, I hadn't been on flickr since...Thursday?

But yeah. I had been at a music festival in Antigonish, NS. It's the EVOLVE festival (www.evolvefestival.com) and I was able to see many stellar bands and get all fucked up around a few thousand strangers all while camping in a giant field. Tons and tons and tons of pictures to come. Sorry!

Vitré

In the Middle Ages, the border region of Brittany (the “Marches de Bretagne” of which Vitré is a part), bristled with defensive fortresses built by powerful families to defend the Duchy of Brittany. With its crenellated towers and massive walls, the castle of Vitré is a perfect example. Sitting atop its rocky spur, Vitré castle dominates the surrounding countryside. It was built in the 11th century and then rebuilt in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries.

Later, these fortresses evolved into medieval towns like Vitré: picturesque alleys with half-timbered houses alongside the rich homes of overseas merchants, sailcloth producers, who settled in the 16th and 17th centuries.

From it's origin as a single story one-room motel office, This structure has been many thing to many owners. Bunkhouse, rental agency, snowmobile shop, ski shop, apartment, rooming house, restaurant, (under 4 different owners,) and derelict for various times along the way.

The paint is peeling and the logs are pretty soft and in need of chinking. It's still here though.
