Oregon Army National Guard Red Card Training - Day 4
September 25, 2025 - Camp Rilea, Oregon
Soldiers with the Oregon Army National Guard participate in wildland firefighting certification training on the fourth day of red card training at Camp Rilea. The 65 Guard members completed comprehensive wildland firefighting courses including S-130 (basic firefighting), S-190 (fire behavior), and L-180 (leadership) as part of the Train Smokey program administered by the Oregon Department of Forestry.
During this practical training exercise, soldiers used hand tools to construct firebreaks by clearing vegetation from a grassy meadow under the supervision of Oregon Department of Forestry personnel. The hands-on training in fireline construction teaches Guard members essential wildland firefighting techniques they will use during actual fire suppression operations.
The training prepares Guard members to support Oregon's wildfire season by learning essential skills for fire line operations, including mop-up operations and fireline construction. Upon completion, the soldiers will be qualified to work alongside professional firefighters and can be deployed through the national incident qualification system when called upon during fire emergencies.
This training partnership between the Oregon Department of Forestry and Oregon National Guard ensures additional qualified personnel are available to support wildfire suppression efforts throughout the state during fire season.
