"This photo captures two of Middle Way House's enthusiastic university interns, Mary and Jillian, who donate time to contribute to the growing Rooftop Garden project.
The Rooftop Garden aims to provide sustainable foodways for clients of Middle Way House’s domestic violence shelter. The project gives the tenders of the garden sense of self as producers and providers. Beyond the beauty of the growing flowers and vegetables, displaying outdoor art made by children of The Rise, the project gives new use to old light covers, animal feed bags, tin cans, tires, kiddie pools and wooden pallets as upcycled planters.
The garden also partners with Middle Way House’s Food Works, a social enterprise that provides employment opportunities to clients, raises the organization's profile in the community, and has the potential to generate revenue through product sales.
The Rooftop Garden serves as a “learning laboratory” for resident children by promoting basic skills acquisition and reinforcing elements of the core curriculum, the mini economy, and provides the opportunity to teach children about planning, budgeting, marketing and customer relations."
