My camera refuses to capture the tank in its true colours so for now, black and white will have to do.
Last weekend in partnership with the Crafts Council, the V&A and the RSA, we took part in a London-wide extravaganza of materials and making, called Make:Shift:Do.
As part of this, we hosted a public open day around the theme of Carbon.
Attendees explored this diverse element; made graphene, chiseled coal, drank carbonated drinks, watched a number of chemistry demos, toasted marshmallows and explored the potentials of carbon fibre. We had one of the world's lightest carbon fibre bike frames for attendees to hold and there was a chance to see the latest nano tube twine, straight from the lab! There was a number of our favourite carbon related materials from our Materials library for people to explore, including our fluorescent diamonds and all 7 types of coal.
One of the most popular activities was pencil making with designer and pencil-maker, Ariane Prin, who taught participants how to make their very own pencils to take home, using simple recycled materials. Participants got their hands dirty and learnt how to create this essential everyday tool.
The work of the engineer -- who usually has the rank of lieutenant in the NLRFD -- is rarely fun or glamorous. However, it's their responsibility to operate the apparatus and supply tools & equipment to firefighters operating inside.
Turn cone upside-down and over the water, ream out the wax using the flat end of the skewer. Use an downward stroke along all sides of the cone. Look inside the wide end to make sure all the wax is out. Relight the cone and return to ear.

Layout made for August session of scrappers`club of my local scrapbooking store. It will ve about ours essential (not persons only objetcs). In my case: clock/time, internet, neat, chocolate, something to write, and Avila (a high mountain of my city). Other essential: the color blue, whay its the reason that I upload for monchromatic challenge.

I have been so unhappy with the Lighting Essentials site. It started as one thing, and ended up being somewhere to post tutorials and lighting information. For a website it was fine... for a communication tool it sucked... big time.
No way to search, no taxonomy, no levels of info... and on and on...
So I bit the bullet and went WordPress like the magazine - www.lighting-essentials.com/magazine - but of course I chose a somewhat different template.
Similar, but different in a lot of ways. The differences make a lot of sense, but the subtle differences in interfaces makes it a bit of a challenge (small, I'll get over it).
The new site is so much easier to update and tag. ( I have tags like 'strobe' and 'novice' and 'portraiture' so you can, like - search for what you want. What a concept.) I will be adding a lot of content that has been languishing because I knew that if I put it up on the old site I would have to move it. Look for a lot of new material coming quickly.
I had the help of a young man who took the template, which was amazing, and tweaked it to do what I wanted it to do... and his help actually got me through the fact that NOTHING went right or according to plan.
But it is now at least useful, and some trimmings coming soon to make it a bit more fun. But usefulness and information is what it is about. I am hoping to make it one of the most comprehensive lighting instruction pages on the net... with articles ranging from natural light to speedlights to the big professional studio kits... but always with an eye to the usefulness to the regular photographer.
I hope you like the new look and feel and let me know if you find any, you know, glitches.
