PP in Lightroom/CS3. I didn't really like the unlit background in the original (a white wrinkled background), so I thought this was a good image to practice a technique I learned from Zack Arias for cleaning up backgrounds to white. I also liked Briana's expression and pose, and I wanted an off-center composition.

Oñate gained a reputation as a stern ruler of both the Spanish colonists and the indigenous people. In October of 1598, a skirmish erupted when Oñate's occupying Spanish military demanded supplies from the Acoma tribe - demanding things essential to the Acoma surviving the Winter. The Acoma resisted and thirteen Spaniards were killed, amongst them Don Juan Oñate’s nephew.
In 1599, Oñate retaliated; his soldiers killed 800 villagers. They enslaved the remaining 500 women and children, and by Don Juan’s decree, the left foot of every Acoma man over the age of twenty-five was amputated. Eighty men had their left foot amputated.
In 1606, Oñate was recalled to Mexico City for a hearing into his conduct. After finishing plans for the founding of the town of Santa Fé, he resigned his post and was tried and convicted of cruelty to both Indians and colonists. He was banished from the "kingdom" of New Mexico but on appeal was cleared of all charges. Eventually Oñate went to Spain, where the king appointed him head of mining inspectors for all of Spain. He died in Spain in 1626. He is sometimes referred to as "the Last Conquistador."
Oñate is honored by some Anglo-Americans, Spanish Americans and Mexican Americans for his exploratory ventures, but is vilified by others for his cruelty to the Indians of Acoma Pueblo.
At the Oñate Monument Visitors Center northeast of Española on New Mexico highway 68 is the 1991 bronze statute dedicated to the man. In 1998 New Mexico celebrated the four hundredth anniversary of his arrival, but that same year individuals opposed to the statue cut off the statue's right foot and left a note saying, "Fair is fair." The sculptor, Reynaldo Rivera, recast the foot but the seam is still visible. Acoma Pueblo was nearly destroyed when Oñate and 70 of his men retaliated for the killing of 13 Spanish soldiers who were hurled off the side of the cliff by warriors when they tried to take grain from the pueblo storehouses in 1598, according the New Mexico Department of Tourism’s Web site. www.nmtourism.org/place/loc/travel/page/DB-place/category...

To get the greatest benefits from essential oils it is very important to use them appropriately. They are very strong plant extracts and extremely toxic if ingested. Do not take internally unless recommended by a qualified aromatherapist or health practitioner.
It is recommended to dilute essential oils in a carrier oil (vegetable or nut seed oil) before applying to the skin.
A ratio of 1-5% essential oil in a carrier oil or cosmetic base is recommended depending on the oils used and the application. 1ml = approx 25 drops
Keep bottles in a cool dark place and keep out of reach of children.
Some people may have sensitivities to some oils, if irritation occurs wipe the area with vegetable oil. Do not use water as oils are not soluble in water and it can make things worse. If poisoning occurs seek medical advice immediatly.
Some essential oils are not to be used during pregnancy. Contra-indications include; aniseed, basil, cedarwood, celery seed, cinnamon leaf, citronella, clary sage, clove, cumin, eucalyptus, sweet fennel, juniper, lovage, mandarin, marjoram, myrrh, nutmeg, parsley, pennyroyal, rosewood, Spanish sage, tarragon and white thyme. However, they are all perfectly safe to use as culinary herbs during pregnancy. For further information please seek the advice of a qualified aromatherapist or health practitioner.
Some citrus oils increase photosensetivity in the skin and may cause reactions if worn in the sun, Oils to avoid when in direct sunshine include bergamot, petitgrain, lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit.

I took this with me on our ward campout. I bought it about four years ago, and it has always been one of my favorite CDs. I once listened to it, along with another CD of Rossini arias sung by Cecilia Bartoli, throughout most of a long train ride from Ravenna, Italy to Viterbo, on the other side of the peninsula.
This CD accompanied me on our ward campout as well. I did not bring a tent with me, and planned to sleep out in the open; however, two considerations forced me to change my mind. One was the appearance by a group of cows, who expressed interest in the goings-on at the campsite. I was told that this same group of cows had shown up at the same gathering the previous year, and had appeared again later that night to snoop around. I decided I didn't want to wake up in the middle of the night with a cow breathing into my face, stepping on me, or, um, doing certain other unpleasant things that cows are wont to do. Moreover, we do live in a desert, and after arriving at the campsite, I was told about the scorpions in the area and how lively they tend to be at night.
I thus ended up spending an uncomfortable night in the backseat of our car. (Parenthetically, throughout the night I reflected on the number of teenage pregnancies that had begun in the backseat of a car, and I wondered how on earth such a thing was even possible; one would instead think that with all its attendant discomforts, it would be a very effective means of birth control.) Much to my surprise, I had no real trouble falling asleep; I just didn't stay asleep long enough at any one time to get any real rest. After I settled in as best I could, I put this CD into my CD player and listened to it with a pair of oversized headphones. The next thing I remember was waking up to hear Cecilia conclude her rendition of "Nacqui all'affanno," from "La Cenerentola," which is one of my favorite arias. It was also the last one on the CD. I had slept all the way through nearly everything else, including another of my favorites, the hauntingly beautiful "Assisa al pie' d'un salice," from "Otello." Thus, even a restless and uncomfortable night can be made at least reasonably pleasant, for me at least, if I get to listen to Cecilia Bartoli as part of the deal.
This photo is dedicated, with great affection, to my dear friend Caroline Madsen, who in my judgment has a voice every bit as good as Cecilia's, and which I look forward to hearing often when she gets a little older and assumes her rightful place in the world of vocal music. In anticipation of that glorious day, I included Caroline in my list of favorite musicians on my Flickr profile the very day I set it up.
