Igualdad Animal ha sacado hoy a la luz imágenes de una granja de cría de patos en el estado de Brandeburgo en Alemania, poco antes de Navidad, para dar a conocer el terrible maltrato animal que sufren.
La investigación, que ha sido publicada hoy en primicia en el importante medio alemán Spiegel, muestra a trabajadores golpeando a patos hasta la muerte con horquetas, ensartando a los animales estando aún vivos y animales vivos arrojados a contenedores.
Según información obtenida del año 2013, la granja alemana suministraba aproximadamente un millón de patos al año a Wiesenhof. Igualdad Animal ha denunciado a esta granja.
Según las Estadísticas del Bundesamt, cada año casi 25 millones de patos son matados en Alemania, la comida preferida de Navidad. Aproximadamente, el 60 % de las ventas se realizan en estas fechas.

This graveyard lost in the woods is interesting in that it doesn't care about the nationality of the buried. Fallen soldiers were buried there were they friend or foe. It was during one of the numerous European wars before the XXth century, can't guess which one, I think it involved Austria, Hungary and obviously Poland.
Eerie atmosphere there, really lost in the wood and the mist...

Jeder Einzelne hielt ein Tier in den Händen, welches als Folge der Nutztierhaltung gestorben war. Die Aktivisten machten auf diese Weise das Leiden von Tieren in unserer Gesellschaft sichtbar und setzten sich gleichzeitig für mehr Mitgefühl und Gerechtigkeit für alle Tiere ein.
Die 100 toten Tiere, darunter Lämmer, Küken, Ferkel und Hühner, standen stellvertretend für alle getöteten Tiere durch den Menschen, vor allem durch den Konsum tierischer Produkte. Die Tiere sind in Mastanlagen, Tierversuchslaboren oder anderen Orten der industrialisierten Tiernutzung während ihrer Haltung gestorben und entsorgt worden.
Zahlreiche Menschen blieben stehen und verfolgten sichtbar bewegt die Aktion. Unsere Botschaft wurde somit an unzählige Passanten weitergetragen. Verschiedene Pressevertreter waren vor Ort, um über die Aktion zu berichten und die Leiden der Tiere öffentlich zu thematisieren.

Female labour force participation in India is not only low but has declined over the last decade or so. Women’s labour force participation has implications for their economic empowerment and, ultimately, efforts to promote inclusive growth and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is, thus, a priority for policymakers and stakeholders to take a comprehensive view to improve labour market outcomes for women.
On March 1, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Feminist Economist Saturday Discussion Group (FESDIG) brings together a rich panel discussion on India’s low female labour force participation. Dignitaries speaking at the event are M. Sathiyavathy, Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment and Amitabh Kant, CEO, Niti Aayog. The panel will be chaired by Prof Bina Agarwal, University of Manchester and will comprise of Prof Preet Rustagi, Institute for Human Development (IHD), Prof Santosh Mehrotra, Centre for Informal Sector and Labour Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Dr Ratna Sudarshan, Institute of Social Studies Trust, (ISST).
‘Transformation of Women at Work in Asia – An Unfinished Development Agenda’, an ILO-SAGE book, edited by Sukti Dasgupta and Sher Verick, will also be launched. It will be followed by a book discussion that will be chaired by Dr Sunita Sanghi, Adviser, NITI Aayog.
Based on original comparative research and extensive fieldwork, the book illustrates how the labour force participation of women in a number of countries in South Asia has either remained stagnant or has fallen. In East Asia the participation has declined from 70.8 per cent in 1994 to 63.3 per cent in 2014, and in South Asia it has fallen from 36.4 to 30.6 per cent over the same period. Gender gaps in labour force participation have been highest in South Asia. Findings show that women across the continent have contributed significantly to its spectacular growth story; yet, social norms and economic factors limit their levels of participation.

Note that this all started with empty plates positioned exactly where you see them here, then me painstakingly positioning the cookies on the plates - first Henry's, then Zachary's.
No cookies were harmed in the making of this photograph.
Afterwords? Well, that's another story!
(Since someone always asks, each dog received ALL cookies on their plate. I love this size of treat for photography (these happen to be Zuke's minis.) They are big enough to be tossed and caught with ease, but not so big as to make a mess or slow down the shoot.)

On International Women’s Day, UN Women, UN Global Compact, IFC and Borsa istanbul (former Istanbul Stock Exchange) came together to organize an opening bell ceremony to highlight the importance of gender equality and women’s empowerment to sustainable development and business. The First Lady of Turkey, Ms. Emine Erdogan and the Minister of Family and Social Policies, Ms. Sema Ramazanoğlu joined the bell ringing ceremony where 33 new companies that signed the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) were announced. The total number of WEPs signatories in Turkey has increased to 83 now making it the 4th country in the world with the highest number of WEPs signatories.

leeds types will know all about this...i don't know if this has made the national news
in the interests of equal pay, leeds city council have deemed that the role profile of refuse collectors (predominantly male) is equal to that of cleaners (predominantly female.) at this time the bin men are paid more, but in a cost cutting exercise rather than give the cleaners a pay rise, the bin men's wage is being lowered. in the worst case scenarios some refuse collectors currently on @£18,000 will have their wages reduced to @£12,000. unsurprisingly they are taking industrial action over this.
however the equality i'm musing here is not between the men's and women's wages, but between these workers and the people who run the council. ironic to see the council leader's expenses equates to nearly four binmen's proposed annual salary. it would be interesting to see if they're proposing to cut their salary by a third, or whether they would empty bins for twelve grand a year. i wouldn't!
