The Great Mosque of Kairouan, also known as the Mosque of Uqba, is one of the most important mosques in Tunisia, situated in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Kairouan.

Established by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi in 670 AD (the year 50 according to the Islamic calendar) at the founding of the city of Kairouan, the mosque is spread over a surface area of 9,000 square metres and it is one of the oldest places of worship in the Islamic world, as well as a model for all later mosques in the Maghreb. The Great Mosque of Kairouan is one of the most impressive and largest Islamic monuments in North Africa, its perimeter is almost equal to 405 metres (1,328 feet). This vast space contains a hypostyle prayer hall, a huge marble-paved courtyard and a massive square minaret. In addition to its spiritual prestige, the Mosque of Uqba is one of the masterpieces of both architecture and Islamic art.

There is a vast difference in using proper ammunition. The top target using 50 grain 5.56/.223 rounds. A nice, tightly placed grouping. The lower half of the photo (when aiming directly at the bottom target) is using 62 grain rounds. The boat-shaped holes are due to the twist of the barrel and heavier bullet creating an under spinning and tumbling bullet; stability is lost. The grossly wide pattern is also an effect of this poorly chosen ammo.

Fish are weighed by the number of fish that equals a pound. Fish were averaging about 20 fish per pound.

The Suquamish Tribe, WDFW and U.S. Navy worked together to transfer about 220,000 coho salmon smolts from the tribe and city of Bremerton's Gorst Hatchery to the tribe's netpen in Agate Pass. Fish were loaded into a WDFW fish transfer truck at Gorst, then taken to the U.S. Navy's Keyport base, where the fish were unloaded onto the tribe's barge, which then motored out to the pens. The fish were released into the pens, where the fish will stay until June 2013, when they will be released. These fish, which are expected to come back to the Sinclair Inlet/Gorst Creek area in two years, marked as hatchery fish, noted by the clipped adipose fins.

Kundgebung am Equal Pay Day 2015 vor dem Brandenburger Tor.

On Monday 18 May 2015 I attended a one day workshop on letterpress printing. This was a ‘surprise’ present for my birthday in April but because the company, www.typoretum.co.uk only run courses to a set timetable, it was a month or so later than my actual birthday.

Based in Coggleshall, Essex, the workshop allowed me to re-visit my past. My first job, on leaving school in April 1962, was as an apprentice compositor for a Birmingham based company, Buckler & Webb Ltd. So it was fun to go back to ‘play’ with proper type and all of the other stuff that goes with it, chases, presses, thins, mids and thicks, furniture, coins, leading (pronounced ledding) and whole host of stuff that comes with letterpress typography. Oh yes, and composing (or setting) sticks.

Letterpress printing has a measurement system of its own based on ‘pica’ or pica’s to be more precise. One inch (almost) equals seventy-two points. But the difference when setting type is important, but it’s close enough.

The owner of the business, Justin, and his colleague Rob, gave us an insight into the world of movable type and we ended up printing out our efforts for posterity.

My two other workshop colleagues were Scott, and lovely lady from Louisiana but now residing in Wandsworth, and Karen, also from Wandsworth. Some of the photographs in this album are of them both, and also a few of Justin and Rob.

We were provided with lunch by Justin’s wife, and delicious it was too. The ‘hot’ savoury scones went perfectly with the vegetarian thick multi-faceted soup!

As for the course; well, I had forgotten lots about letterpress printing but it came back to me slowly. On hand to help were the ‘experts’, and I did achieve an end result. Oddly, I took photographs of Karen and Scott’s worthy prints, but not my own. But I can remedy that when I add a picture of it later to this album!

A fun day, with nice people and it was a totally enjoyable experience. More on this course can be found here:

The thesis of my portfolio examines and nuances the relationship between “separate but equal,” symmetry, and balance. While on a recent a road trip to Hearst Castle the Supreme Court began hearing oral arguments over marriage equality. Later, as I was touring the mansion, I was struck by the Renaissance symmetry of the façade and the interior spaces. Hence, this body of work is an aesthetic response and investigation that seeks to create situations where similar entities attempt to be “equal.”
