Since 1994, Epping has been the end of the Central Line. The rusty, overgrown tracks in the foreground once continued to Ongar, but this is now operated by the Epping and Ongar Railway from Ongar to Coopersale.

A train of 1992 stock has just arrived from London.

I can't remember exactly whereabouts in Epping Forest this was. I used to walk there quite frequently when I lived in the Romford area in east London. Taken in October 1997 with a Bronica ETRS rollfilm camera. 2524_120B203_12.jpg

My first trip to Epping Forest and I was blessed with almost perfect colour and conditions - happiest four hours with a camera I've had for a long time.

Epping Forest is 2,400 hectares of ancient woodland on the border between Greater London and Essex.

The Epping and Ongar Railway between Ongar & North Weald as seen from the cab of 08836

As part of the Epping and Ongar Diesel gala the railway provided, for £5, an opportunity for passengers to travel in the cabs of any of the operating locos. I paid for 2 trips, the second being a run between Ongar and North Weald in the cab of 08836

The driver was very keen to exalplin how the little 08 worked and how it struggled at times with the gradients but that FGW had done a really great job with refurbishing and replainging the old shunter

Extensive track replacement was underway in a massive operation to renew the line during a period of closure.

Ongar is the zero datum point from which distances (now in km) are measured on the London Transport network. This 0.0 milepost is at the end of the line at Ongar Station, although I believe the true datum is at the other end of the station.
