Mandarin Duck at Strawberry Hill Pond, Epping Forest

December 2019

1962 stock leaves for North Weald.

This unknown old family photo was taken in Epping Forest, all I know about the family is that dad was a policeman in the 1920's. Epping Forest is an area of ancient woodland in south-east England, straddling the border between north-east Greater London and Essex. It is a former royal forest, and is managed by the City of London Corporation.

Epping - Ongar Railway London Transport weekend

D25197. A misty, moisty morning in Epping Forest.

Over the Christmas weekend our daughter introduced us to Epping Forest in Essex, somewhere that was new to us. Despite the miserable weather I took some cameras along...

Through a bit of Epping Forrest.

Type 18A Mk VI model Wickham Trolley seen at Ongar Railway Station on the Epping Ongar Railway. This example dates from 1975 and was delivered to British Rail's Sevenoaks depot as number 68068 (DB966033 & DX 68086 are also listed numbers for this vehicle).

I just couldn't resist the signs for Epping Forest on my way home from a meeting in Waltham Abbey today. Unfortunately, I wasn't dressed for wandering through the woods and muddy paths, so this is as far in as I got.

Seen operating the diesel service on the Epping Ongar Railway is this Class 117/121 combination.

Nearest to the camera is W56287 which is a Pressed Steel Class 121 DTS (Driving Trailer Standard) dating from 1961 owned by Pressed Steel Heritage and is loan to the EOR from the Colne Valley Railway. This vehicle is one of 10 Class 121 trailer vehicles built to work with Class 121 'Bubble Car' units. This example was one of two to be fitted with a corridor connection at one end by British Rail in 1988. At the other end of the consist is 51384 and this vehicle is a Pressed Steel Class 117 DMS (Driving Motor Standard) owned by the EOR and was previously on the Lavender Line roster.

The end of the line at Ongar on the Epping Ongar Railway with the sort of bits and bobs you would expect at a heritage railway. Of interest is the zero point sign. All mileages on the London Underground are measured from here as, until 1995 this was the furthest most London Underground Station until the Central line was cut back to end at Epping London Transport kept the zero point at this location.

Lovely walk in this famous forest just outside London. It was a regular haunt during my younger years, particularly on horseback.

A permanent way member of staff removing weeds at Ongar Station on the heritage Epping Ongar Railway (EOR) in Essex (UK).

A very important job.

Epping forest. Still not quite there, another couple of weeks.

My first trip to Epping Forest and I was blessed with almost perfect colour and conditions - happiest four hours with a camera I've had for a long time.

... with a little help from Photoshop, again ;-)

My contribution to bonfire night. In camera ME & ICM.

Waterfalls in Epping Forest? whatever next

Epping underground station - end of the line ( but still conneected to E&O)

Seen operating the steam hauled diagram at the Epping Ongar Railway on the day of my visit was this Great Western Railway (GWR) 2-6-2T Small Prairie Tank which was built at Swindon works in 1927 and was rescued from Barry Scrapyard in 1980. Its original number was 5521 but was painted in London Transport livery and given the fictitious number of L.150 at the request of London Underground to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Metropolitan line.

This locomotive has also worked overseas and has taken part in the Wolsztyn Parade in Poland 3 times, has worked steam hauled passenger trains in Poland and for MAV Nosztalgia in Hungary and has attended steam events in Slovakia.
