Taken in Epping Forest in January.

Route 35 can be traced back a long way, although its first incarnation, route 35A introduced in April 1906 is not very recognisable today – it was run by the Great Eastern London Motor Omnibus Company and operated from Epping Forest (Rising Sun, Sundays) or Leyton (Bakers Arms, Monday to Saturday) to Oxford Circus (Monday to Friday) or Marble Arch (Sundays). In October of the same year a slight hint of today’s route was introduced as route 35B and running from Epping or Leyton as per the 35 service pattern but to Elephant and Castle daily.

There were numerous changes to service patterns over its early years and as at 03/10/34 the route 35 was running from Clapham Common Old Town to Highams Park Station via Brixton, Camberwell, Elephant, London Bridge, Bishopsgate, Shoreditch, Dalston Junction, Clapton and Leyton. It was further extended in the north to Chingford Hatch in 1940 while express journeys also operated between Leyton and Liverpool Street on Monday to Saturday.

Over many following years the route structure remained very stable – the next significant change was a Saturday extension to Chingford (Royal Forest Hotel) in late 1966. This did not last too long and the eastern end of route was chopped back to Hackney Station in September 1968. The Clapton to Whipps Cross section was replaced by new route 48, which is still running, while the Leyton to Chingford Hatch bit went to route W21 – this no longer exists and the sections that used to belong to route 35 are now operated by the 212 and 357.

Another period of stability lasted until early 1982 when the route was extended to Clapham Pond from Hackney Station on Monday to Saturday. It was converted to one person operation in June 1986, at which point it reached its current southern terminus of Clapham Junction for the first time.

The late 80’s and early 90’s were a period of change for many routes and the 35 was no exception – it started to make its complete transformation into a basically South London route from what started as an East London route. In 1987 it was re-routed to Homerton Hospital from Clapton but in 1990 was withdrawn between that point and Shoreditch, creating the route we have today in every way except for garage journeys running to and from Ash Grove. These garage journeys dried up in 1991 when Camberwell Garage took over full operation of the route – it had previously been shared.

Camberwell Garage has a long history of association with the route and up until its withdrawal from Chingford had constantly shared the allocation with Leyton Garage (at least from 1934 when clear records are available.) Hackney Garage took Leyton’s share from 1968 until it closed in 1981, when it transferred to Ash Grove. However, this long run of allocation was broken in 2009 when the route was awarded to Travel London and garaged at Battersea (QB.) That company, by then Abellio, moved the route closer to ‘home’ in 2012 with a transfer to Walworth Garage but their tenure was to be one contract only. It returned to London Central and Camberwell Garage on the 30th April 2016.

This picture shows an ADL E40H MMC, fleet number EH40, passing through Brixton. This is the official type allocated to the route but the garage is using a common pool with a batch of MHV class MCV bodied Volvo B5LH’s ordered for route 40 – that type is just as common on the route and the odd diesel Enviro 400 also appears from official allocation for routes 468/X68.

Epping-Ongar Railway LT to LRT Running Day 18 February 2023. The unique twin staircase Volvo Ailsa B55-10 with bodywork by Alexander was giving journeys on route 339 from Epping Station to Ongar. It was new to London Buses in 1984 and is now preserved by London Vintage Bus Hire (London Bus Company).

Bit of a gloomy afternoon but the colours are getting better. Between Epping and Theydon

Last January in Epping forest, would be nice for fog to appear any time soon.

My first trip to Epping Forest and I was blessed with almost perfect colour and conditions - happiest four hours with a camera I've had for a long time.

Over the Christmas weekend our daughter introduced us to Epping Forest in Essex, somewhere that was new to us. Despite the miserable weather I took some cameras along...

Silver Birch trees seem to be dying out in Epping Forest, so I was pleased to get this picture.

That day's steam contribution was 4141, which I paid 2/6d to "cab" at Old Oak Common open day in the late 60s. Seen at North Weald.

I had fun piecing these 100 rainbow hexies, which will probably be appliqued onto a dark background to make a cushion cover

The old water tower, now part of a new school.

Seen stored adjacent to the Epping Ongar Railway running line just past Ongar Station is the pretty odd sight of a Suomen Valtion Rautatiet (Finnish State Railways) 5' gauge Lokomo Oy Hr1 Class locomotive number 1008 awaiting restoration.

I love how the long exposure (15 seconds) brings out so much detail giving the forest a surreal almost drawing like quality.
