An important job of the A14 environment team was to monitor the full length of the scheme for wildlife that might need special protection measures. One of our watercourse monitoring cameras spotted this otter family in 2017.

We were joined on Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, by Monique Pool of Green Heritage Fund at our 10:30 school screening. In addition to the door prizes, Cornelis Van Sypersteyn School was given a set of student encyclopedias for being the first new school to register for this year's festival. In the evening, Amb. Nolan opened the public film festival, delivering remarks before the screening of "Thin Ice: The Inside Story of Climate Science.

A male Sumatran tiger, resident of Indonesia's tiger breeding centre at Safari Park in Cisarua, about 120 km (75 miles) west of Jakarta, roars in its enclosure. The tiger is one of the 31 kept by the centre in an effort to save the species, whose numbers have been declining sharply in the past decade. Conservationists fear that the Sumatran tiger may become extinct in the next decade. Picture taken October 12, 2002. REUTERS/Supri TO ACCOMPANY FEATURE STORY ENVIRONMENT-INDONESIA-TIGERS

Jim Bowsher loves local history. He loves having it come alive for people, and not just being some stuffy thing in a book. That's part of why he built what he calls the Temple of Tolerance in his backyard. Well, actually, in three backyards that he purchased to make room for the giant glacial rocks that stand at the heart of it.

Jim's also an amateur archaeologist with a penchant for finding so-called banded rocks indigenous to this part of northern Ohio - the result of volcanic activity a long, long time ago. He tracks down these enormous boulders, then moves them into place in the yard with levers, no power tools, and in doing so has created a stately, majestic backyard environment quite unlike any other we've seen.

In and around the rocks, he's added pieces from old buildings and farmsteads around Wapakoneta. When people roam around and over the Temple of Tolerance, the energies from those structures inspire dialogue and memories. And that's how history should be taught, he believes.

Jim says airplane pilots have come to his door because they couldn't believe what they saw flying over it. And oh yes, there's bluegrass music here on warm Thursday nights. You're invited.

Restoring community and environment in northern Ukraine

In northern Ukraine, communities are working to rebuild their social fabric and restore the environment in the wake of conflict, with support from the European Endowment for Democracy. One key player in this effort is Eco Misto Chernihiv, a local NGO actively involved in revitalizing public spaces and promoting environmental awareness. Through grassroots initiatives, including cleanup efforts, community gardening, and sustainable urban planning, Eco Misto contributes to both immediate recovery and long-term resilience. These efforts underscore the importance of local leadership and civic engagement in Ukraine’s broader post-war reconstruction and environmental recovery.

In Israel, just about every house and apartment has a dood shemesh, as you can see on this rooftop. A dood shemesh is just solar water heating. It's simple, it's cheap, and it saves energy.

So why don't we do this in southern California, where the sun shines some 340 days a year?

Volunteers worked on Discovery Hill to care for a network of naturalistic trails and paths. Their work focused on remulching pathways, which not only provide visitor access to the south island’s sweeping views but also create a healthy soil environment for the area’s native plantings.
