Here you can see what it's like to try and sneak up on some damselfish. This is where, on the approach, I can first spy some great damselfish and start looking for a place where I can put a couple of fingers down (again, on rock, not on coral) to steady myself and hunker down for several shots.

2D aspect

- Statement of Intent for Environment 2D -

The theme of my AS art coursework is ENVIRONMENT. In both my areas of 2D and 3D, I have decided to look at architectures in the environment. The subject matter will differ a little to one another depending on the media of the two.

I have always been interested in details and intricacy of objuects. Hence for my 2D area, I will look at Architectures of antiquity. Focusing on the details on its façade and interior, the decorations, making use of the many medias categorised as 2D. After looking at a number of artists i am particularly drawn to a British artist, JOHN RUSKIN (1819-1900). A leading english art critic of the Victorian era. He was also an art patron and draughtsman among many others. He did detailed sketches and painting of rocks, plants, birds, landscapes, and architectural structures and ornamentation. Also writing on subjects spanning over a large range. from geology to architecture, literature to education, Botany to political economy. His writing style and literary forms were equally varied. Essays, treatises, poetry, lectures, travel guides, manuals, letters and even a fairy tale. My initial idea for my final piece is to create a drawing of fragments/ sections of a building influenced by one of Ruskin’s “Fragments from Abbeville, Lucca, Venice and Pisa”

In celebration of the GreenTown Turkish and Kurdish community program, we held an event at the Alevi Community Council of Australia in North Coburg on Friday, 11 June.

75 people attended, members of Melbourne’s Turkish and Kurdish communities. We showed a documentary that the Alevi community produced, in English and Turkish, about GreenTown and heard a lovely performance by a Turkish sem (like an oud) player. We also gave out certificates of achievement to all 13 GreenTown Assessors and Suzan, our community consultant.

Speakers included: Kelly O’Shanassy, CEO of Environment Victoria; Carlo Carli MP, Member for Brunswick (in place of Premier Brumby); Stella Kariofyllidis, Mayor of Moreland; Surmeli Aydogan, Chairperson of the Alevi Community Council of Aust; Suzan Saka, GreenTown Turkish program community consultant.

(l-r) Russel Glover (Chair of the Solitary Islands Marine Park Advisory Committee), then-Minister Verity Firth and Bob Edgar (Solitary Islands Underwater Research Group), cutting a caake to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Solitary Islands Marine Park.

Long before the introduction of the Marine Parks Act this area was recognised by locals for its conservation significance many of whom worked hard to see this important part of the NSW coastline protected.

As part of the 10 year anniversary is a timely occasion to acknowledge the achievements of the community especially the Solitary Islands Underwater Research Group (SURG) which has be active for over 21 years.

SURG was instrumental in identifying the underwater values of the Coffs Harbour region in the late 1980s’ and early 1990’s and subsequent inclusion of the area in the marine park boundaries still in place today.

Members have dedicated thousands of voluntary hours to marine conservation and

research since its foundation.

Projects have included identifying sea floor community structure around the five major islands, the development of an underwater trail at North Solitary Island, monitoring of reef health and the “Solitary Islands Marine Park Marine Species Photo Inventory” which has been included in the SIMP school education kit for the benefit of hundreds of school children in NSW.

Philadelphia

Development in Philly is out of control, worsening conditions for working class people & the environment. Hundreds of community activists took to the streets to set the tone for Philly's 2023 election: anyone running for mayor or city council better have policy solutions for ensuring long-term, working class residents have a place in this city and that Philly is truly tackling and prepared for the climate crisis.

The march was organized by community groups fighting for land justice across our city, including Philly Thrive, Sunrise Movement, VietLead, Save UCTownhomes, Save the Meadows, Cobbs Creek EJ, and more!

English ivy grows densely on the forest floor inside the Piney Branch-Ingleside Mini-Oasis in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of Northwest Washington, D.C., on July 17, 2024. Established by Rock Creek Conservancy, the site has a series of official and social trails that make it a popular location for local Rock Creek hikers and walkers. The Piney Branch-Ingleside Mini-Oasis falls in a southern section of Piney Branch Park, and is bordered on the south by an alley just off of Ingleside Terrace NW and Bancroft Elementary School, Piney Branch Parkway to the North, Mt. Pleasant St NW to the East, and a staircase entering Rock Creek Park off of the Ingleside Alley to the West. (Photo by Rhiannon Johnston/Chesapeake Bay Program)
