GALVESTON, Texas (June 4, 2015) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District celebrated the Corps’ and U.S. Army’s 240th birthday with an awards ceremony to recognize the Employee, Engineer, Regulator and Supervisor of the Year, induct a USACE Galveston District retiree into the Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees as well as to honor staff for their contributions to the community, state and nation.

The North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers (NEIMME), commonly known as The Mining Institute is an organisation dedicated to the research and preservation of knowledge relating to mining and mechanical engineering. Founded in 1852, the institute, in Newcastle upon Tyne, possesses one of the largest collections of such mining information in the world. Its library, named after the first President Nicholas Wood contains more than twenty thousand volumes of technical literature, in the fields of mining, geology, mechanical engineering, government blue books, mine rescue, mineralogy, mineral chemistry, mining statistics, mining law, seismology and other related topics

This man was interesting. He is the engineer of the little train. He told me about coming to American when he was 34 years old, he's now 77 years old. The photo he is holding is of him when he first came to American. He was very patient and informative. He spoke to Sean in several different languages and asked Sean if he would like to drive the train. He let Sean drive the track about 4 times. I didn't get his name but we will be back and see him again soon.

The Los Angeles District marked anniversary 237 of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during their annual event June 29.

 

Under the commander’s motto “Taking Care of People,” the District converged on the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area in Irwindale, Calif.

 

Engineer Day was the perfect venue to recognize teammates for their decades of service and accomplishments. This year, 78 District employees met the criteria of 10-to 45-years of service. In all, 28 employees were available to receive their award at the event.

 

The recent flows from summer monsoon rains have eroded embankments at a number of locations within Nogales Wash, exposing and threatening critical infrastructure and property. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District is working to stabilize banks along the Nogales Wash.
