Some children made bird feeders from half apples. A few days later the birds had been very thorough! Sometimes of a morning I feel this way too :)
Poem today, a bite of Robert Frost, After Apple Picking
Of apple-picking: I am overtired
Of the great harvest I myself desired.
There were ten thousand thousand fruit to touch,
Cherish in hand, lift down, and not let fall.
For all
That struck the earth,
No matter if not bruised or spiked with stubble,
Went surely to the cider-apple heap
As of no worth.
“In all our searching, the only thing we've found that makes the emptiness bearable is each other.”

A veces me parece que una canasta, unas diagonales o una portería de futbol son metáforas de la vida misma. Jugamos y jugamos empeñados en tratar de meter más puntos o goles de los que necesaria e irremediablemente recibiremos.
Ley de vida.

CN U73082-09 approaches Iron Junction with an empty train returning to Thunderbird for another load of crude iron ore. This is one of the two "T-Bird" trains that shuttles crude ore from Thunderbird to Fairlane around the clock. Luckily for us, this one had a classic old IC SD40-2 for power. The train uses loops to both load and unload, so the same engine leads in both directions.
A Baltimore & Ohio GP40-2 and a Chesapeake & Ohio B30-7 bring a train of empties through Danville, West Virginia. The S4 on the left belongs to the Southern Appalachian Coal Company (Julian Mines). It’s interesting that it is an as-built Alco, and not a Caterpillar re-engined “bug slug” more typical of mine power in the area.
Fascinating and terrible desert with its subtle nuances of color and soft and hard structures and formations. Here man may very little to intervene in the work of nature..
Surely Autumn/Winter garden fences without their plants must suffer from "empty nest syndrome" the same way that parents do when their children grow up and leave?
Late for Fence Friday again, so a Happy Belated Fence Friday to you all. :)
Working north toward the El Segundo Mine past the Badlandesque landscape is an empty Escalante Western train.
Cheddar Gorge
Driving home from Wales on Sunday I stopped at Cheddar Gorge to meet up with my friend Scott for sunset.
This is a bit of a long one so settle down for a. nice cuppa...
We met in the car park at the pack of the gorge and took the slog up the hill to the top. Everything was going well until we got to the spot where we needed to set up and Scott had realised he'd lost his phone on the way up. So, off he went looking for it while I carried on watching the sunset.
I got a few shots off and finally, Scott came back, albeit empty handed and pissed off about losing his phone. We decided to call it a day, but ladies and gentlemen, there is a twist...
As we walked back in the fading light Scott stopped randomly at various places and called to his Google assistant on his phone, and thankfully near to the spot where he thought he'd lost it he shouted OK GOOGLE and low and behold, his phone heard him and lit up like a Christmas tree!! It was hidden near a tree and probably wasn't very visible during the daylight, but the wonders of modern technology and the darker light helped us find it with no bother.
So, in the end, it was a bit of a wasted journey for Scott but at least he'd found his phone and the evening wasn't a complete disaster.
Here's the first of two shots I took, I hope you like it.
If you get up early enough you can have the place to yourself.

CPKC's empty northbound ballast train 3GPS starts down the depression under the Government Bridge in downtown Davenport, IA. The pumps are working overtime to keep the depression clear of water.
The railroad would lose the battle in a few hours as the mainline was shut down near Mound St with floodgates closed to protect the water plant.
