The 1964 MGB still had the three-bearing engine, but in February 1964, it got positive crankcase ventilation and a new intake manifold. The five-bearing 18GB engine arrived in October 1964, for the 1965 models. The MGB roadster had a banjo-type axle until 1967; all MGB GTs had a Salisbury axle.

The early Mark I MGB had no backup lights or side marker lights. A permanently attached top cost extra -- roadsters came standard with a "pack-away" top with a cumbersome framework that had to be assembled before the top could be raised.
