So much develops behind the scenes at a young age. Weeks later, these hands have sprouted and promise some piano-playing capability, perhaps... SoCal
After three months in El Segundo, I am now used to seeing and hearing helicopters patrol along the South Bay beaches. But tonight I heard a helicopter outside of my apartment for at least minute or so; way to long for just passing by. I looked outside to see a helicopter not patroling the beach but slowly flying towards the oil refinery. Uh-oh.
As I opened the window I heard another helicopter. I went to the other side of my room to see another helicopter. While I was getting my camera, I thought that two helicopters above my heads, between an oil refinery and an airport, are.. well,.. a little bit uncomforting. I tried to snap a picture, but didn't have my zoom lens attached. The two helicopters are now standing in the air. Uh-oh.
I keep watching the helicopters. Wait, there's a third one! And there's a fourth! Holy crap, there's five! At this point I'm walking back and forth to the window with a mixed feeling of sensationalism and uncertainty about what to do. I see that one of the five is flying quite low and has a spotlight directed down.
And it was then that I remembered what the Angelinos' most favorite pastime is: watching car chases.
In a moment of relieve I jumped from the window to the PC and started my TV software, and to no surprise, found the caption BREAKING NEWS on the first local channel.
Apparently the chase started in L.A. but LAPD wasn't able to follow the guy through the traffic towards LAX. El Segundo PD then took charge, was able to lead the guy into spikes and follow the guy onto the 105 East. The guy was driving on the rim of at least one wheel but could still keep 40 mph. When he exited at Vermont and tried turn a corner he lost control and spun around. The chase resolved with no incidents. The guy didn't try to run.

If you are visiting a favorite viewing site on the hill with a girlfriend, wife, or children, beware, you might here a shriek. There is a growing population of mice on the hill They aren't aggressive, and any sudden movement or sound will get them running, but they are hungry. Its not unusual for them to come up on the pavement to within 12 inches of your foot, looking for crumbs.
Why? People throwing garbage over the fence instead of using the trash cans, overflowing trashcans on the weekends, crows keeping the hawks away, and more and more people eating their lunch while watching the airplanes. There is plenty of vegetation, but that is used for hiding in, not for eating. So, if your are visiting, warn your significant other, and please take care of any garbage properly.
Occasionally, you may also see a gopher, but he's a vegetarian. And crows, noisy crows.

A Greenpeace activist dressed as Barbie was detained by police outside a Mattel office building in El Segundo as protesters rappeled down the walls of Matell's corporate offices.
You've got to admire the naming of some beers! It was mid afternoon and though I was tempted by 'Arrogant Bastard', it was over 7% and therefore a tad strong for a starter. I opted for the IPA and it was excellent.
Got to be over 25 to drink in here!
