In 1955 the EE Electronics laboratory shifted to the top floor of the mining building. This photo is the general undergraduate electonics laboratory
Schematic of tachometer electronics. Very straightforward except for R3: without this, the input to the arduino will always be basically +5V until you try to measure it, at which point it goes to 0v when the light beam is interrupted. The input impedance of the meter makes it work. Hard to diagnose.
You can read my blog entry on modding my dance mat for more info.
A view of the controller box on our home-made dance mat. I've peeled away some of the gaffer tape to reveal the wiring, and I'm about to cut the glue holding the box to the board in order to get to the electronics underneath.
Just don't! OK!?!
No respectable pursuer of all things electronic should let himself run out of solder.
Around experiments six and seven in Make: Electronics.
This experiment is the introduction to switching logic in electronics, using classical mechanical switches. Here, we wire two SPDT (single-pole, dual throw) toggles into the circuit in such a way that if they are oriented the same (both pointing North, or both pointing South), then the circuit is open, and the LED is dark.
Here's what's inside the toy car I'm using to make ToyBot. I'm going to take out the radio-control electronics. I've already ripped out the piezo speaker that makes an annoying noise when the car moves.
The electric motor is at the left. When it runs one way it drives the wheels forwards. When it runs the other way it drives the wheels in opposite directions, making the car spin in place. That's managed by the gearbox.
