Eggs Benedict is a traditional American brunch or breakfast dish that consists of two halves of an English muffin each of which is topped with Canadian bacon, ham or sometimes bacon, a poached egg, and hollandaise sauce. The dish was first popularized in New York City.

We got 5 new point of lay pullets this week (We were down to one old hen so it was time for some new young chickens)

They have just started laying - 3 eggs today, one yesterday. I have kept hens pretty much continuously since 2004 but I never cease to marvel and appreciate the handful of eggs as I lift them from the nest box. These little pullet eggs are so small that that adds further to the fun and awe. They wont stay small like this, in a week or so they will be laying much bigger eggs.

No stack this time, just a little delirium imagined while preparing the photo that I will present for the next Macro Mondays on the theme of the egg (egg)

This is a nod to my friends in North America who had the chance to admire the total eclipse on April 8.

Single photo taken at home with my trusty 5d mkIII and the no less trusty EF100mm f/2.8 L IS USM, a glass plate, a real egg and a lamp.

Fly:

Family: Tachinidae

Order: Diptera

Caterpillar:

Doratifera quadriguttata

Family: Limacodidae

Order: Lepidoptera

The photo shows an attack by a parasitoid Tachinid fly on the caterpillar of the four-spotted cup moth.

The fly is depositing an egg on the caterpillar while carefully avoiding the venomous urticating spines. Site selection is critical, as the caterpillar may attempt to groom and remove the egg. Typically, the fly aims to lay the egg behind the caterpillar’s head; however, in this instance, the egg appears to be placed at the anterior end of the caterpillar's body (the egg can be seen upon closer inspection). These caterpillars generally keep their heads concealed, raising them only occasionally. In this scenario, the caterpillar seems to be orientated with its head positioned downward behind the leaf, while its tail-end clasper is visible at the leaf’s edge. The tachinid fly may may have been duped into selecting a suboptimal placement for her egg, potentially allowing the caterpillar to groom it off. This situation illustrates how the fly may be deceived by the caterpillar’s defensive evolutionary strategy. The caterpillar employs automimicry to divert attacks from its vulnerable head to its tail; notably, both ends are difficult to distinguish and each possesses a pair of red horns.

If the egg is not groomed off then it will hatch and the larva will then parasitise the unfortunate caterpillar, eating it from the inside.

First egg from the chickens that live now in my city garden.

Easter eggs dyed by Kearah. I think she was trying for a large variety of colours, patterns & techniques.

These where all "store bought" eggs as the ones from out bckyard chickens come precoloured a pale brown or blue.

Last year we had so many extra colourful hard boiled eggs that I took them to work as snacks & it took almost a week to through them all.

Egg Hunting - Happy Easter to all Flickr Friends and visitors. Easter eggs and bird nest found during the egg hunt this spring.

(022/365) This has to be the earliest I have ever seen Easter eggs for sale in a supermarket. Easter Sunday is 17th April this year so that's a whole 3 months early.

I can't believe the price either. I wouldn't pay 14 Euro for an average sized Easter egg & when was it for sale for 18 Euro? I thought for a sale discount like this to be legal the item has to have been on sale at the higher price for a certain number of days prior to the discount kicking in. Hmmm Mr Tesco are you playing by the rules here?

Yes it is.

Very simplified, but still.

My travel plans were fast approaching and I spent a couple of weeks staring at eggs, hoping they would hatch before I left. As you can see, I got lucky. Having returned from my trip both colts are growing fast and doing well. I did remove a large leaf that was in the foreground because, well I hated that leave. No matter how I positioned myself, it obstructed the foreground right. Take that leaf!

50 years of egg painting tradition in my family, and I don't get tired of it -- something very satisfying to decorate on this perfect surface and curve, a small project each time that can still last for hours... the oldest egg here might have 30 years, the latest are the big ones coming from geese -- happy sunny peaceful Easter holidays to all of you!
