SOL Austin: Net-Zero Capable

Beck-Reit and Sons Ltd., an Austin General Contractor, has been working on sustainable construction methods since the day we started building houses. Our desire to build a better house led us to develop SOL (Solutions Oriented Living) subdivision in East Austin. We partnered with local architect, KRDB, to design, develop and build a net-zero capable sub-division centered around a community of 40 modern homes. Thru passive design, efficient building envelope and solar power these homes can produce more energy than they consume. The homes have been rated 4-5 star by the Austin Energy Green Building Program. SOL Austin has received national attention and has been featured in the New York Times, Metro-Homes, DIY Network’s "This New House", Builder Magazine, and Green Builder Magazine.

Sabato 9 maggio si è svolto l’attesissimo Open day di RUFA, la giornata dedicata all’orientamento, in cui l’Accademia ha aperto le sue porte per mostrarsi a tutti i futuri iscritti. Il pubblico è stato numerosissimo, oltre 500 persone hanno affollato il cinema Admiral prima, dove lo staff RUFA ha spiegato l’offerta didattica e i servizi per gli studenti, e le aule dell’Accademia poi, dove i docenti hanno dato dimostrazioni pratiche delle varie discipline. Ancora una volta RUFA ha dato dimostrazione della sua efficienza organizzativa. Da giorni la città di Roma era piena di intriganti manifesti con la campagna visual fatta proprio dagli studenti, coordinati dai docenti. Dozens of community members came to our Green Homes Meetup to learn how to make their homes greener, safer and more efficient. During this free event hosted by GreenChange.net, we discussed how to upgrade our homes, save money and fight climate change.
Featured speakers included:

They talked about preparing for wildfire, electrifying and weatherizing our homes, getting energy-efficient appliances, switching to LEDs, as well as applying for rebates, financing and tax credits. These informative talks were followed by a lively group discussion.
This community meetup took place in our partner Good Earth’s new classroom in Mill Valley on October 16th, 2019 at 6pm. It was led by Fabrice Florin and Tom Flynn, with Lily Cohen, Al Grumet, Kelly Horner, Rob Mayfield and Marilyn Price. We’re grateful to all our gracious contributors. :)

Nearly 300 experts working to address the complex illegal wildlife trade (IWT) issue worldwide joined us to discuss how we can collaborate and address research gaps to ensure the best evidence is informing action and policy (www.illegalwildlifetrade.net/iwt18event). A large delegation of the Evidence to Action organisers and presenters were then invited to attend the UK government’s London Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade 2018 to further represent research and help close the divide between evidence and policy. A summary of the research evidence on the trade’s scale, impacts and complexity, the remaining evidence gaps and how we can move forward efficiently following the events, can be found in the Briefing Note (osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/35ndz/).

Efficient heating of a chapel
In the district of Miltenberg in Bavaria, a chapel built in the 13th century and renovated in 2011 is heated with Vitramo infrared heating. It is mainly used for occasional church services, events and weddings. With Vitramo infrared heating, it is possible to raise the rooms to a comfortable temperature in good time before use and otherwise keep them frost-free. For small churches, chapels or rooms that are used in this way, the use of more expensive conventional heaters is not worthwhile due to their short service life. The Vitramo VH10050 infrared heating elements, each with a connected load of 1,210 watts, are mounted on the historic wooden ceiling. They are controlled in accordance with the eco-design via a programmable room thermostat. The Vitramo infrared heating primarily heats the walls surrounding the room and the floor by means of radiant heat. Visitors also feel the radiant heat emitted by the infrared heaters during the time of use.
