On Sunday 9 September three Mosman households gave a tour of their homes to celebrate Sustainable House Day. The tour, which was part of Council’s Living Environment Series, was a huge success with participants having the opportunity to learn about solar panels, water harvesting, composting, sustainable building materials, edible gardens and more.
The tour highlighted how easy it is to make your home more sustainable. Whether you live in a unit, townhouse or free standing dwelling there is always something you can do to reduce your ecological footprint.
The homes on the tour included a Federation period residence in the Orlando Conservation Area, a free standing home built in 1976 and a strata title unit in the heart of Mosman. Although all the homes were very different, the common theme was that they had all been retrofitted to become more sustainable.
Participants were amazed at the amount of food that can be grown in a small backyard, the amount of money that can be saved through energy efficiency and the creative ways to capture water for re-use. The tour was part of a national event which sees hundreds of sustainable homes open each year.
It was an extremely inspirational day with participants going home with new ideas and enthusiasm to make their own homes and lives more sustainable.

Efficient heating of cemetery chapel
Cemetery chapels or funeral halls are only heated on the morning of the funeral or a few hours before a funeral service. Otherwise, these rooms are unheated. With conventional convection heaters, only the air volume is tempered. The enveloping surfaces remain cold! When the mourners arrive, the expensively heated air escapes again through the open doors to the outside. Better: The modern Vitramo infrared heating primarily heats the walls surrounding the room and the floor by means of radiant heat. Even during the funeral service, visitors to the funeral hall feel the radiant heat emitted by the heating elements.
The municipality of Kleingartach in Baden-Württemberg efficiently heats the new building of their cemetery chapel with Vitramo infrared heaters. The heating was very attractively suspended from the ceiling by wire rope. The experiences have been positive throughout. The infrared heaters are switched on in the morning before the funeral. Also during the funeral service the visitors can feel the pleasant heat radiation.
The products suggested for this purpose:
1) Ceiling heating elements of the VH series.
These are produced as frameless glass elements in sandwich construction. They consist of a 5 mm thick satinised ESG glass pane, colour RAL 9010 white, which is heated on the back by a heating layer that converts electrical energy into heat. The layer is glass-fibre reinforced and embedded in a plastic compound. The back is effectively thermally insulated and completed by an aluminium cover that also encloses the sides. The max. surface temperature is 190 °C. For ecodesign-compliant operation, these infrared heating elements must be equipped with an external room temperature control (see Vitramo room temperature control).

2) VC-A series dark radiators
These are for surface mounting on the ceiling or wall. The max. surface temperature is 360 °C at an ambient temperature of 20 °C. The infrared dark radiator can also be suspended from ropes. Fixed use, for temperature control in closed rooms with a maximum height of 5 m, e.g. also in funeral halls, mortuaries, chapels for mourning ceremonies. For ecodesign-compliant operation, these infrared heating elements must be equipped with an external room temperature control (see Vitramo room temperature control).

SOL Austin: Net-Zero Capable
Beck-Reit and Sons Ltd., an Austin General Contractor, has been working on sustainable construction methods since they day we started building houses. Our desire to build a better house led us to the development of the SOL (Solutions Oriented Living) subdivision in East Austin. We partnered with local architect KRDB to design, develop, and build a net-zero capable sub-division centered around a community of 40 modern homes. Thru passive design, efficient building envelope and solar power these homes can produce more energy than they consume. A condominium complex community in San Diego called Rancho Bernardo Vista Del Lago installed our energy-efficient LED lighting all over the exterior and outdoors of their buildings. The lights installed included step lights, post tops/street lights, down lights, landscape lighting, spot lights, and flood lights!
