The Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, the Rwanda Environment Management Authority, UN Environment, UNDP and GIZ, convened the Africa Cooling Efficiency Conference in Kigali. The one-day event brought together approximately 70 cooling and energy efficiency stakeholders, decision makers and experts.
It’s a gold strike for energy efficiency! This innovative material is created by maneuvering tiny structures called metal organic frameworks (MOFs) onto porous carbon particles. The material enables more efficient operation of adsorption chiller devices, which provide air conditioning for vehicles, U.S. Navy applications and buildings. Researchers are working to foster efficient, continuous methods for production of the MOF-carbon core-shell composite material, which also may offer applications in carbon capture and catalysis. Funding for the project was provided by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Laboratory Directed Research and Development program and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy program.
Research team members: Radha K. Motkuri, Jagan Bontha, Igor Kutnyakov and Pete McGrail, all of PNNL’s Energy and Environment Directorate.

The Special American Business Internship Training Program’s (SABIT) Energy Efficiency in Construction is designed to train 19 mid-to senior level professionals from Eurasia. These delegates, screened and selected by the U.S. Department of Commerce, represent industry specialists who are seeking information on trends and innovations in energy efficient construction. This program will introduce these Eurasian professionals to industry developments, and help them establish contacts with American organizations for future projects and activities.

Rwanda’s Ministry of Environment, UN Environment through the Ozone Secretariat and United for Efficiency, and the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program have hosted a group of environmental experts, philanthropists, business leaders, international NGOs and government representatives to mark the adoption of the Amendment and strategies to ensure its long term success. The event took place on 28 January 2019 at the Marriott Hotel, Kigali. The event recognised the work Rwanda has done to meet its obligations under the Kigali Amendment. These efforts, which have been possible thanks to the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program and UN Environment's United for Efficiency, include conducting a market assessment, developing a national cooling strategy and minimum energy efficiency standards, and creating financial tools to support businesses to invest in efficient cooling.
