Hillside House is an extensive residential expansion for a home owned by an energy consultant. Structural insulated panels (SIPs) not only provided the structural integrity and energy efficiency sought by the owner and architect, this pre-engineered framing system achieved clean and elegant building forms and lines, and allowed for exterior and interior finishes that are almost impossible to obtain in conventional framing. SIPs worked in concert with steel beams and structural supports, and provided embed cavities to hide certain steel beam conditions to gain certain design effects. The roof panels were tapered to provide a smooth slope to the roof, barring any ‘stepped’ roof design or interior ceiling height changes. Rain gutters were channeled into the SIPs to remove their visibility. Extensive use of can lighting required special chase fabrication into the roof panels to accommodate fixtures. The expertise of SHELL Building Systems with SIP design, engineering and fabrication accomplished the intricate details sought by the owner and architect.

The Mayor of Dudley became the latest person to register for an energy scheme which could help people save money on their fuel bills.

 

Dudley Council has this week launched its next big switch campaign and has received full support from the borough’s first citizen, Councillor Alan Finch.

Navy, Devonport, BCT, LDG, RTS: The BCT 10/01 course take part in the efficiency cup competition.

As well as helping others to cut their energy consumption, ODE Yalitim has also been working to slash their own energy costs. They’ve received financing from the EBRD, which has enabled them to set up a co-generation system. It allows the company to use less energy whilst maintaining production levels. And it means fewer pollutants are released into the atmosphere.

Funding energy efficiency upgrades with Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) means the upgrades are assessed against the property and not the owner. The financing is paid for out of the energy savings over the life of the upgrade. Leigh Bond, renewable energy contractor and Brian Scott, developer say such financing will support dramatic uptake in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects on buildings. ...many houses in the city center are very old. The energy needed to heat those old buildings is immense. Modernising the windows and insulating external walls could improve energy efficiency, but many home owners shy away from the investment.

Two notes about this photo:

 

1) While I was composing what I thought would be a great shot, a huge SUV parked and backed right up to the bike loaded with bags, ruining my so-called composition. I was/am not happy about it.

 

2) On the other hand, the intrusion of the SUV created an interesting pairing of transportation methods. This graphic illustrates the fuel efficiency of all our various modes of transport, including cars, planes, boats, hybrids, etc. No surprise, but the bicycle is THE MOST efficient method available – and the SUV is the absolute worst, by a huge margin. (Thank you, "too-big-to-fail" auto companies.) I'm not sure what adding 7+ grocery bags to a bike does for fuel efficiency, but I was happy with what it did for photography.

  

Civil servants in Djizak and Namangan region, city and district khokimiyats are beefing up their ICT skills. They're learning about trends in the ICT sector in Uzbekistan, the official policy for ICTs in public administration, skills to use office applications in daily work, Local Area Network (LAN) and other types of electronic networks for exchanging information, managing e-mail accounts, as well as benefiting from the national legal database like www.lex.uz.
