Three survivors of trauma, including Secretary Landgraf, told their stories to nearly 200 professionals committed to embedding a trauma-informed network of care in Delaware. A trauma-informed level of care assumes that most children and adults have experienced some form of trauma, especially as children. The social workers, medical professionals, criminal justice officials, child advocates, domestic violence experts, educators and others in attendance were encouraged to switch from asking, “What’s wrong with you?” to the more open-ended, “What happened to you?” “Healing doesn’t require a full re-telling of the traumatic experiences, but asking that question, ‘What happened to you?’ provides the opportunity to disclose,” said Secretary Landgraf, who disclosed that she is a survivor of sexual abuse as a child. “And when secrets are disclosed it provides relief, reduces the stigma, and ends the isolation. Healing can truly begin.”

Secretary Landgraf and the keynote speaker, Marcy Witherspoon, a Philadelphia-based social work consultant and trainer, also talked about the 15-year Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, which provides groundbreaking insight into traumatic experiences that occur in childhood and their consequences for adult life. Said Witherspoon: “Trauma can play over and over in your mind unless or until you have healed.”

"A cornerstone of this new system is that it is based on multiple measures of teacher effectiveness and requires these measures to be validated against one another. The starting point always has been and should be observation by a trained evaluator, whether a principal, a department head or a peer, for those districts that adopt a peer assistance model. In addition to observing the educator at work, the evaluator must assess the work product of that educator – such as lesson plans, drama performances, numbers of students successfully guided through the college admissions process or development of district budget priorities that support student learning."

Lifelong educator Frank Maraviglia '58 returned to his alma mater for the dedication of an atrium named in his honor.

Frank of Jamesville, N.Y., gathered with members of his family, including brother Raymond ’61 of Port Orange, Florida, and nephew, Mark Procopio ’95 of Warners, N.Y., for the dedication and unveiling of the Maraviglia Atrium in the School of Education.

SUNY Oswego named the atrium in honor of Maraviglia and in acknowledgement of a $2 million gift he made to the university last December. The gift establishes the Maraviglia Education Enrichment Fund in the university’s highly regarded School of Education, which will support scholarship and engagement opportunities for students as well as innovative academic programming from the faculty.

Speakers at the event included President Peter O. Nwosu, Provost Scott Furlong, School of Education Dean Laura Spenceley and Bryan Diaz-Ximello ’25, a junior double majoring in history and technology and engineering education with a minor in sustainability studies.
