During its annual retreat, the Delaware Cancer Consortium and physical educator teachers from across the state heard from Gov. Carney, Lt. Gov. Hall-Long, Secretary Walker and national experts on the role physical activity plays in reducing the risk of cancer. Creating a culture of prevention through physical activity, particularly among the young, was the theme of the April 25 retreat.
Dr. I-Min Lee, a professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard, said only 27% of high school students and 20% of adults in Delaware get the daily recommended amount of physical activity. Dr. Lee said that the habit of exercise “follows you when you become an adult” and helps to reduce your risk for the vast number of cancers. “Prevention is hard,” Dr. Lee said, “and it’s hard to show the difference it makes.”
Secretary Walker said a 2014 Nemours survey of 2,600 Delaware households with children found that 36% of children ages 2 to 17 were overweight or obese. “We as a state can do better,” she said. And that 54% of children ages 2 to 17 consumed 5 or more servings of fruits and veggies per day. “Again, with good health promotion, we can push that number even higher,” Secretary Walker said.
Progress was made in the reduction of children consuming 2 cups of sugar-sweetened beverages per week and the percentage of Delaware babies who were ever breastfed.
The retreat’s keynote address was delivered by Tom Farey, executive director of the Sports and Society Program at the Aspen Institute. Farey’s work has found that physical inactivity and obesity are risk factors for cancer and other ailments.
