The Challenge
Salzburg Global Seminar (www.salzburgglobal.org) was founded by young people in 1947 to challenge present and future leaders to solve issues of global concern. Nearly 70 years later, a top priority facing societies in and beyond Europe concerns youth and their economic prospects. Statistics on the true cost of youth unemployment for the global community are hard to come by but one thing is clear. For societies and individuals to prosper and flourish, systems innovations will be needed to equip all young people with the knowledge, skills and opportunities to achieve their potential and perform the jobs of the future.
Strategies for Today:
Austria and Germany have long-standing dual systems of vocational education and worker training and enviably low levels of youth unemployment. In today’s global knowledge economy, is this a strategic asset that can be exported – especially to parts of the world with high unemployment and gaps in the skilled labor market? Could such systems be further improved and what would this mean for public-private sector cooperation? Do vocational educational tracks meet rising employer demands for flexibility and critical thinking?
Needs for Tomorrow:
As digitalization, robotics and artificial intelligence transform the job landscape, the future of work and the role of education will come under increasing scrutiny. With figures such as Google CEO Eric Schmidt calling for “permissionless innovation” and a “culture of creativity”, what practical approaches could boost human capital development across all sectors of society? Will future educational systems need to ‘relearn learning’ and transform teaching? Will the distinction between ‘academic’ and ‘vocational’ become outdated as part of these complex changes? What partnerships between government, research, business and technology could pave the way for tomorrow’s citizens to function in and contribute to radically different economies?

Three speakers on a moderated panel will bring contrasting international perspectives to these critical questions, followed by a debate with invited high-level guests. Panelists:

Insights and recommendations from the Vienna debate will help to inform Salzburg Global Seminar’s ongoing strategic programs on education, innovation and economic and social sustainability, building on expertise within Austria. We are currently seeking to develop a multi-year intervention with partners from autumn 2015, provisionally entitled Generation Next: Pathways into Work. This will build on Salzburg Global’s earlier three-year series on Optimizing Talent: Closing Educational and Social Mobility Gaps and its complementary programs on emerging challenges for the global economy and social and regional cohesion.

The Seattle Sea Gals Cheerleaders visited U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach on Saturday March 26 to educate and entertain the community.
In the morning the Sea Gals put on a cheerleading clinic for several young ladies, teaching them some dance moves and having fun.
Later, the Sea Gals entertained an enthusiastic crowd in Katterbach Gym, demonstrating the dance moves that have made them a favorite in Seattle and beyond.
Following their performance the Sea Gals signed autographs, posed for photos and chatted with their fans.

I'm on the far left, and you can barely see my friend Karen behind me. I don't know who the woman in the middle was. Benazir Bhutto is, of course, on the right, reaching over to shake my hand.
I was lucky enough to be invited to this closed session at UALR in September 2002, along with nine other women from around the university. We each were allotted ten minutes or so for questions with Bhutto. Mine were primarily about the education of women in the Middle East. The woman to my right asked about the embezzlement charges that Bhutto would be tried for a couple of years later.
I'll probably blog about all of this later.

If you don't know what it is, hopefully you will only learn about it on the internet, the news or a paper, not from a fraud alert call or from your next debt or credit card statement.
We were skimmed in Elyria at a gas station pump. Luckily it was a credit card and fraud alert called and shut the card down. It will still cost us, in time, cash and prizes and a process that will draw out for at least a month or two. But mostly a bit of our freedom.
My girlfriend pumped her gas at a station near Toledo. For her the process will be longer, since she used her debit card, her checking account was tied to her savings account. Which both must be shut down.
Please don't be a victim, educate yourself on how you might be compromised by...

St Marys Hospital was originally called the "Royal Hibernian Military School". The School was founded in Dublin to educate orphaned children of members of the British armed forces in Ireland
The foundation of the School came about in 1769 when King George III granted a Charter of Incorporation on 15 July, the School Governors holding their inaugural meeting on 6 November in Dublin Castle.
The buildings housing the school were erected in the Phoenix Park, overlooking the village of Chapelizod in the Liffey valley (in full view of Wicklow mountains). It first took in 90 boys and 50 girls as pupils (in the charge of an Inspector and Inspectress, assisted by the Chaplain and an assistant mistress) in March 1770. The site originally occupied 3 acres (12,000 m2) but by 1922 its boundary walls enclosed thirty three acres.
By 1808 the system and organisation of the school followed closely that of its sister school, the Duke of York's Royal Military School (then at Chelsea, London, England). By 1816, when Thomas Le Fanu (father of Sheridan Le Fanu) took over as chaplain, there were 600 children at the school.
In 1853 the school's first "stand of colours" were presented by the then Prince of Wales and, in the same year, the girls at the school left to join their own separate establishment, the Drummond School, which was founded for them at Chapelizod.

Latina Education Conference:
Atrévete a Soñar ¡Educate!
(Dare to Dream: Get Educated!)
This is a one-day conference for Latina girls in the seventh through eighth grades. The purpose of the conference is to empower these young women to create an educational vision for their futures and then to start them on their way to making that vision a reality.
The twelfth annual Atrévete a Soñar ¡Edúcate! conference will take place on January 25, 2020, on the campus of College of DuPage, Illinois.

My summer 2022 fieldwork was very successful and amazing, thanks to the Cheney Study Abroad scholarship. With the assistance of the Kenya Wildlife Service veterinarian and African Wildlife Foundation we captured and fitted GPS collars to two lionesses from two distinct prides, comprised of ~28 individuals within the Lumo community conservancy. I am targeting to collar about 12 prides. GPS relocation data from these collars will be used to analyze resource selection functions (RSFs) for lions within Tsavo Conservation Area (i.e., Tsavo National Park, Lumo community conservancy and other adjacent ranches). GPS relocation data will also be used to monitor lion movement and their interactions with humans and livestock, thereby helping to develop mechanisms to prevent livestock depredation which leads to retaliatory attacks on lions.
