Long-tailed Parakeets

Helmond Castle is a square medieval castle located in the city of Helmond in the province of Brabant. The design of the castle features four corner towers and is without a central tower, or a donjon. The layout of the castle is very similar to other fortresses in the area, including Radboud Castle, Ammersoyen and Muiderslot. In terms of defensive capabilities, Helmond and other castles with similar designs proved to be better defended.

History

Construction of the castle began somewhere around 1325. Helmond was the replacement of an older castle, known as ‘t Oude Huys, which stood hundreds of yards west of the castle. In 1981, excavations revealed the original structure’s dungeon and a few artifacts.

In the 12th century, Helmond was in possession of the Hornes and the castle’s original owners were the Berlaer family, who were then succeeded by the Cortenbach family. In the late 1600s, the castle would fall into the hands of the Arberg family and later Frederik Carel Wesselman in 1781.

A terrible fire damaged the west wing of the castle in 1549, but the structure was not demolished. In the late 1500s, attempts to besiege the castle were unsuccessful as the castle’s defenses were able to withstand the attacks. However, in the early 1600s, the castle was sieged by Prince Mauritis and State troops after the attackers launched 6 cannons at the castle. The damaged was repaired, but shortly after, the castle was once again besieged by Walen’s troops.

In 1921, the castle was sold to the municipality of Helmond by the last Lady of the family under the stipulation that the castle would be used for municipal purposes. The Lady’s wishes were respected and the castle served as a town hall from 1923 until the 1970s.

Very little remains of the original interior of the castle as the structure had continually been updated throughout history. A few stucco ceilings and several fireplaces are the only original features.

Today, the castle still hosts weddings and houses a small museum that educates visitors on the history of the castle.

South Street Philadelphia

In 1994 Isaiah Zagar began work on the vacant lot next door to his studio adding tunnels, grottos and walls and decorating the surfaces with his unique handmade mosaic tiles and a variety of scavenged items and ordinary objects like bike wheels, dinner plates, fans, bottles and figurines. He was replacing graffiti with art that defied category. Isaiah’s work offered a boisterous display of creative energy full of colorful shapes and cleverly repurposed objects. While some neighbors disapproved of his unconventional public art, others supported him by dropping off leftover ceramic tiles from remodeling projects and other household golds for his possible use. The themes depicted in Isaiah’s mosaics were inspired by his own life and travel experiences and broader world events. They offer an intensely personal vision and serve as a kind of visual storytelling, both representational and abstract and open for interpretation by viewers. In 2002 as neighborhood land values were rising, the out of state owners of the vacant lot wanted to sell it for development, threatening the destruction of Isaiah’s work there. At that time the Philadelphia Magic Gardens was formed as a non-profit organization not just to purchase that property and preserve his artwork for public enjoyment, but to inspire creativity and community engagement by educating the public about folk, mosaic and visionary art. The Magic Gardens, a fully tiled indoor space and outdoor sculpture garden at 1020 South Street is now open daily to visitors. Many other of Isaiah’s mosaic murals adorn the walls of surrounding buildings and are simply a colorful part of the neighborhood streetscape. His murals can be found on more than 200 walls, with most of his work in Philadelphia

"""This Santa is preforming his task by educating the young reindeer how they should run on gras, when there is not snow at all! It happens more and more these days, that they have to travel through areas under different weather conditions.

As you can see, they are good listeners and also eager to start their actually training on the gras. Santa's sleigh with the big bag is already on standby."""

My brother has always been in awe of me. Haha, Denny.

I am beginning to wonder if we have to change the way we educate our children, they seem to have missed so much learning throughout the last 2 years? I have 9 grandchildren and they most certainly have suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic. I wonder, if we should come up with new ideas, we have many brilliant minds in our society, I think that they most definitely should be coming up with new ways as to how best educate our children and make life better for families. I wish that I had a brilliant mind because I most definitely would be working on this problem amongst others. So those of you who can, please put your minds to this gigantic problem. Education is a must, we learn to interact, debate (not quarrel), respect one another, find ways to work together successfully in teams, listen, and can spend our whole lives learning which is fulfilling! Thank you for putting up with my thoughts.

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️❤️❤️

It was even thought that a subspecies, the giant Canada goose, which does not migrate but stays put all year round in states such as Kentucky and Indiana, had been extinct for decades. Fortunately, a small remaining population of these large geese was discovered by biologists in Rochester, Minnesota. That provided the core to bring back the giant Canada goose population with a vengeance.

The Canada goose and its subspecies became a federally protected bird. Regulating its hunting, educating the public on how to create a do-it-yourself gaggle of geese, and preserving wetlands became critical to its resurrection. Thanks to conservation efforts, migrating Canada geese in general are nowadays so plentiful that they are considered by some as pests. Honk honk. Poop poop.

Irony is when something turns out, quite opposite of what it seems to be on the surface. The World is apparently full of ironys.

The dazzling hues of this blue ocean provide enough warmth for the peaceful people who preferred to habitat these isolated islands.

(Originally meant as transit points for migrating birds crossing Indian Ocean enroute to the Sub-Saharan Africa.)

Whether this isolation meant comfort, convenience or hindrance to development, is up to, whoever is interpreting them.

For the past Thousands of years, one thing though, has remained constant.

These islands have always been ruled upon, with an iron fist... by one, selfish, incompetent Thug. (Be it King, Maharajah, President... whatever name he chose to call himself.)

One after another.

The islands smallness, isolation and the peoples ignorance of happenings of the outside World must have meant a blessing, to whoever was at the control.

The islands smallness, isolation and the peoples ignorance of happenings of the outside World must have also meant a most obscene obstacle for the islanders... and reason to remain as they always have been.

Poor.

Earlier this year, a UN initiated survey surprised everyone... when majority of islanders confessed, as to being unaware of what 'basic human rights' meant.

Earlier this year... Authorities also made a promise to allow operation of radio stations (to educate people) within the Country, in 'near' future.

Irony.

Puku’s feathers are soft and delicate with the humble browns and grays you’d find in Oak Tree bark. We were tempted to ask if we could touch her. The little Western Screech Owl appeared to invite tactile contact from humans. We were told that in the past, she was petted, and her head area rubbed but some of her feathers were rubbed off, …loved off, because of the oil present on our fingers. Puku had developed a little bald patch which has since resolved. So, no more petting for this avian gal.

Puku has cloudy eyes. She had contracted a virus when a youngster that would have blinded her completely if it were not for veterinary intervention. She has 25% vision in her right but was totally blind in her left eye.

Puku is one of seven birds of prey that serve as education ambassadors. All were rescued and rehabilitated and, due to permanent disabilities, can no longer survive in the wild. Best known for his novels Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Far from the Madding Crowdand Jude the Obscure, Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) studied modern languages as an evening class student at King’s College London from 1865 to 1866.

Thomas grew up in Dorset. His family lacked the money to send him to university, so he became an apprentice to a local architect at the age of 16. In 1862 he came to London to work and set about educating himself. During this time he immersed himself in the intellectual culture of the capital and attended evening classes at King’s. Poor health led to him returning home in 1867, where he continued working as an architect whilst working on his early novels.

As well as a novelist, Thomas was also a prolific poet, playwright and short story-writer. Following the furore around the publication of Jude the Obscure in 1895, which was branded ‘Jude the Obscene’ by the Pall Mall Gazette, he gave up novel writing to concentrate on his poetry. His first collection was published in 1898 and included poems from the past thirty years. Some of his best-known poems were from a sequence written between 1912 and 1913, after the death of his first wife.

Throughout history, female nudes have been used in cemetery/memorial art. For a deeper examination, visit northstargallery.com/pages/Sensualilty.htm

Many images in this set were taken inside Forest Lawn Memorial Park's (California, USA) Great Mausoleum.

The general public is not allowed to enjoy these and many other works of art in the Great Mausoleum. Entry is granted only to those able to afford the high price of admission and their living family members.

Why?

I turned the door handle of the Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn in Glendale, California, USA and as the heavy door opened, I entered another world.

The massive, cathedral-like structure houses not only the remains of thousands able to afford the lofty ticket price for admission, it houses beautiful works of art. Sculptures, stained glass windows and ceilings, elegant marble throughout and massive architecture...all are off limits to the general public.

I didn't know at the time I turned that door knob, that Forest Lawn is consumed about keeping this structure and its contents strictly away from public view. I was simply a guy trying to take photos I like who quickly realized the challenges posed in this setting. I was simply on quest that began at the cemetery where my Mom and brother were buried almost twenty years ago.

One can attend a viewing of a stained glass window, The Last Supper, but, I've since returned (hoping to share with my family the splendor within) asking to enter the mausoleum. We were turned away. Forest Lawn's policy strictly prohibits entry to the general public.

Why? One would think that Forest Lawn (and its founder Mr. Eaton and its longtime and current President and CEO, John Llewellyn, would want to share with the wider world, the beauty contained within given the frequent ugliness which hits us in daily life...providing a form of comfort which is their business.

Forest Lawn loves attention but only on their terms. It thrives being known as the Disneyland of death services (and I mean that in the most respectful way ...after all, Walt Disney himself chose Forest Lawn) and hundreds of the famous and infamous call Forest Lawn home.

It is obvious Forest Lawn takes its mission seriously and provides a needed service exhibiting the highest levels of excellence from its impeccable grounds, to fine facilities and attentive staff.

Forest Lawn's theatrical stagings for adults and school children, its public art, museum and grounds filled with celebrities and movers and shakers, convey a seemingly mixed message when it comes to excluding the public from the massive amounts of great art held within the Great Mausoleum.

Why the exclusion? Staffing its maze of halls isn't a concern; staff members are everywhere throughout the park. Security? Sure it's in a bad neighborhood. But, as I wandered unknowingly in this remarkable place from which I was supposed to be excluded, I never saw graffiti...even in the restroom.

In fact, I never saw another soul (sorry, no pun intended). And, that, to me, is sad.

As I wandered, I was challenged by low light, by my impulse to rush my hand held shots since I had a vague gut feeling I was alone, but not; that someone was about to find me taking photos in a place where I was the forbidden invader...the only one...alive...appreciating fine art. Certainly, those entombed can not enjoy it.

Mr. Llewellyn, please open the doors to the Great Mausoleum for the public and the profound and positive impact its will have on us.

Mr. Llewellyn, I extend this offer:

if you have looked at my photos and they have spoken to you, please contact me. I will offer my photographic services to Forest Lawn to use in ways upon which we can agree.

The possibilities are limitless:

I can photographically catalog all of Forest Lawn's art at all its properties; the images could be published in many forms...books, dvd sets, and more; guided tours; respectful events built around the art and the images; museum exhibits.

Again, the possibilities are limitless and all can be accomplished in good taste equal to your mission statement and still be respectful of your residents and their families and, serve to educate and benefit the larger public.

Thank you,

A BIT OF BACKGROUND:

Many years ago after burying my mother and brother within days of the other, I was wandering their cemetery pondering and was intrigued by the statues I saw.

I was taken by the artist's talent in being able to capture the female form (since that was all the cemetery had). The sculptor's manipulation of the viewer's perceptions...cloth and how it draped, creating muscle tone, emotions displayed in facial expressions, all created from stone, piqued my interest.

I began an informal quest to research and find as many sculptures and to photograph them which overwhelmingly depicted the female nude (or partially so) in the cemetery/memorial setting.

As my cemetery visits grew, I began to realize that many of the sculptures seemingly evoked a sensuality in this form of memorial art.

Here, then, is my photos...a project in evolution...the female form as portrayed in an often sensual manner in memorial art.

On Saturday, I did my first Moth Week event of the year. Three more to go. This time I was invited to setup for a city park for their first ever moth night. The next two are state parks. Then my friend's garden. I am not a moth expert (I like talking about spiders more), but I know enough and it is fun to share what I do know with people.

We had over 40 moth species at the park. I am sure there were many more, but it is hard to photograph everything while educating visitors about them. But that means less effort posting them all to iNaturalist. I would know hardly anything about moths if not for iNaturalist.

This Rindgea moth is very common here but can't be identified to species. I don't often get a chance to do an artistic moth shot. Moth sheets aren't very aesthetic. This one landed on some leaves just as I turned off my lights.

Educate and inform the whole mass of the people... They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty.
