My sixth puzzle of the 2017 Mega-Marathon hosted by puzzle-forum.de.
This one was a joy to assemble all the way through. First, the quality of the pieces was so much better than anything I had worked so far. Older Educas (this one from 1998) are just so well made.
I love the composition of this painting, and the dominance of linear details - the flags, the ropes, the railings and the floorboards. I started the puzzle at about 11 a.m., worked until 4, took a break for an hour, and then went back and finished it at around 10:30 that evening.
Completed in 10 hr., 20 mins. 18.6 secs/piece; 193.6 pcs/hr. Difficulty rating: 1.9/10.
Completed this a while ago. The actual pieces seem much more muted when you are completing the puzzle than they look in the finished picture. -56AP
I thought this puzzle would be a good start to 2019. The puzzle comes in 4 bags of 2500 pieces each. There's a lot of dark pieces, so I'll be doing this one bag at a time. I was happy to see Educa included a large size poster to help facilitate assembly :-)
Progress #2: Day 4. Spring is coming along nicely. I have also worked on the borders for each photo as these pieces were easy to pick out.
Here is my next project which I will most likely start Wednesday. It is based on a painting by Diego Velazquez and was released in 1998. It is probably one of the oldest puzzles in my collection, i.e how long I have owned it. It was one of the first large scale puzzles I purchased and have probably owned it for 11-12 years. This is an older edition of this puzzle and was later released as a 10,000 piece version which does not include the panels on the left and right.
An enjoyable puzzle, not too easy, not too hard. Nice quality, sharp and clear print. Good, sturdy pieces, although the fit is very loose.
Here's the intersection of the vertical and horizontal midseam. More examples of the precarious cut.
I will have to secure these pieces as a block to preserve the puzzle for posterity.
My next completion. An early Educa from 1996. Usual piece quality and early puzzles have the wavy line pieces.
Progress 3: Day 6. I have completed all my sorted areas. I finished the second panel on Monday night and after a late night session on Tuesday/Wednesday morning I completed all the background areas. Now time for the meat of the puzzle. All the remaining pieces are in one box so I will be going back to my sifting method for the rest of the puzzle.

From the box lid:
"Doctor and Doll, Norman Rockwell:
Doctor and Doll, by the famous North American illustrator Norman Rockwell is one of the most famous Saturday Evening Post covers. It was published on the ninth of March 1929 and the critics praised the mastery with which the artist captured this charming scene."
We've had a pretty good run lately: the last 20 puzzles have all been complete (yes, I know some have been brand new, but even new puzzles can be incomplete sometimes). Sadly that's come to an end with this Educa from the 90's, a classic Saturday Evening Post cover. We noticed the missing piece pretty early on and hoped it would be the only one, which thankfully it was. This was very much a case of working from the outside in, so after filling in all the light background we were left with a lot of dark pieces and faced the prospect of slowly trying each piece until we found one that fitted. Sometimes that's the only way and means you have to be patient. Surprisingly, it went pretty quickly and we completed after a couple of days.

Progress #3: Day 4-evening session. Normally I don't post updated photos throughout the day but I felt like this was a good time to take a photo. Have completed Spring leaving Winter and Autumn to be done. I also did all the tags at the bottom of each picture. I have finally turned over all the remaining pieces in the box but have not done any sorting.

The box has been opened, but the pieces are still in four factory sealed bags.
This is a comparison between the cuts of the Educa Jigsaw Puzzle from 1988, 1998 and 2006. The cuts are the same for the jigsaws which are made in 1998 and 2006. The oldest one from 1988 has a different cut and the pieces don't fit so good like the younger versions.
This is my next project. Rich has done the 8000 and 4000 versions of this. The pieces look very small compared with the Falcon I have just finished. The variety of pieces including wavy lines will ease completion. They don't look too dark so I can read them.
The obvious starting place was the maroon border and then the orange pieces. Most of the rest of the puzzle has quite muted colours. Progress will probably be fair to slow but quite a pleasant puzzle.
Progress 5: Day 11. Progress has been slow going. I have not had much time to work on it over the past 4 days except I did make some progress late Sunday night. I am still hoping on being able to finish by the end of the week so that I can start my next project this weekend.

Progress 6: 2 Weeks. I am in the home stretch, should be able to finish by the end of the day. I was able to make a lot of progress on the horse on the right as the pieces were slightly easier to identify than other areas because of the redish brown color. At this point it is all about patience.
Progress 4: 1 week. Making good progress with the people on the left and center so far. The amount of light pieces though is quickly dwindling which will leave a lot of dark brown pieces. I figure I will probably save the horse on the right until close to the end as I imagine it will be slightly difficult
